Judged Dredd: Sleeping Duty written by Michael Carroll, drawn by Nick Dyer, from 2000AD Prog 1956

Judged Dredd: Sleeping Duty written by Michael Carroll, drawn by Nick Dyer, from 2000AD Prog 1956

2000AD has a quiet Judge Dredd story by Michael Carroll as its lead feature this week, which reminds me of a Batman story in the same vein from a few years back in which a couple of street hoods discussed the Caped Crusader’s myth. It’s a fun story, but to be honest I’d have to say it’s a criminal waste of the brilliant Nick Dyer‘s drawing skills – he really shines at all-out, no-holds-barred action, as some of you may recall from the work he did on STRIP Magazine a couple of years back. Here’s a guy crying out for pick up on a US book – I hope he gets his wish.

"Brass Sun" shines again.

“Brass Sun” shines again.

Rufus dayglo continues to stun with his work on "Bad Company"

Rufus dayglo continues to stun with his work on “Bad Company”

Dredd reservations aside (the story isn’t bad, it’s just quieter than usual!), there’s still plenty to enjoy in the Prog, particularly “Brass Sun” and “Bad Company”. Rufus Dayglo is just hitting fast and hard every week with amazing action work and stunning visuals based on Peter Milligan‘s script, that are positively jaw dropping. Terrific work!

If you missed the “floppies” then do pick up the trade paperback of Resident Alien: The Sam Hain Mystery, which is out now. There’s never a dull moment when it comes to artist Steve Parkhouse’s amazing work and the story from Peter Hogan is an absolute gem.

I’d also recommend the Fatale Deluxe Edition Hard Cover Volume 2 from Image Comics. Well worth seeing what allthe fuss is about over this great series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. It will soon have you hooked.

A page from the Lion Graphic Bible re-telling the Garden of Eden story

A page from the Lion Graphic Bible re-telling the Garden of Eden story

Nestling in the “Other Publishers” section this week is an absolute gem: the Lion Comic Book Hero Bible, with art from former Marvel UK staffer Jeff Anderson, Siku, coloured by Richard Thomas.

The new Lion Comic Book Hero Bible puts the testaments’ greatest heroes to its darkest villains in a new light and is described as the Bible as never seen before. “The men and women of the Bible were not perfect, but nor were they ordinary. Faith gave some power. To lead. To save. To destroy evil. Others succumbed to the darkness. But still more was required. An ultimate hero. To fight the ultimate battle…”

This affords me the chance to give a mention to the Lion Graphic Bible, bible stories adpated by Mike Maddox and drawn by Jeff, first published in 1998 which took  five years to complete and has had outstanding success since. It’s been translated into at least 17 languages and, when we first reported on it way back in 2005, it had UK sales of over 16,000 and 600,000 worldwide. It was released in paperback in 2004.

The project won the annual Prix de la Bande Dessinée Chrétienne at the annual Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angouleme (the Graphic Novel’s equivalent of the Oscars – in France) in 2000. It also won Norway’s Christian Bookseller’s Best Youth Book of the Year.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Jeff back then. “I thought someone was taking the mick!”

In a totally separate vein, don’t miss out on the first issue of Slash & Burn, written by Si Spencer, a murder mystery described by reviewer Jordan Richards as “easily one of the best new Vertigo titles to debut so far. Si Spencer does a terrific job laying down the groundwork for the readers”, although David Pepose is less enthused over on Newsarama. My guess from reading is that it’s going to be a bit of a slow burn… I’ll get my coat.

As usual, don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

• You may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are available in all good bookshops and supermarkets now.

From BOOM! Entertainment.

What’s to Love: Grant Morrison is one of the most prolific and best-selling writers in comics, earning a reputation for his ability to effectively revamp superheroes like Animal Man, Batman, and the X-Men. Writer: Mike Carey Artist/ Cover Artist: Mike Perkins

What’s to Love: The team of Mike Carey (Suicide Risk, The Unwritten) and Mike Perkins (Deathlok) come together for the first time since 2005’s Spellbinders for a taut horror thriller set in their native England. If you’re a fan of horror films like Insidious and The Conjuring, or comics like Curse and Nailbiter, you’ll love how Rowans Ruin unfolds as it slowly clues you in on the terrifying secret that is at the heart of the story.

What It’s About: Katie has always had things pretty easy, growing up in comfortable circumstances in Florida. But when she finds herself with a long summer break before grad school, she decides to do a house-swap with a British girl, Emily, as a way to vacation relatively cheaply-and to get out from under her parents’ attentiveness. England is great, so different from Florida, and the house, called Rowans Rise, is charming. But soon she starts having nightmares-really, really, strong ones. Curious, Katie researches the owners of the house, and discovers it may have more of a sinister history than she thought …
