Something For The Weekend: US Comics On Sale from 18th November 2015 – Sound the Klaxon!

2000AD Prog 1957

Our weekly list of British creator-skewed new comic releases kicks off with this week’s wraparound cover for 2000AD by Jake Lynch. Dredd at his finest!

But the thrills don’t stop there, because we also get a new issue of Judge Dredd Megazine and there are some graphic novels from British publishers out this week, including a great selection from Cinebook that included Red Baron Graphic Novel Volume 3: Dungeons & Dragons and KLAXON from SelfMadeHero by Si Spencer and DIX. I was privileged to interview the creative pair on this bizarre and visually disturbing horror story at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival last month – it’s a quirky tale that Si revealed came to him as a dream. Nightmare, more like – you’ll never look at a Liquorice Allsort in the same way ever again if you buy this book… You can read my recent interview with Si where he talks about the book here.

On the US side launching this week from the DC Comics imprint Vertigo is Red Thorn, written by David Baillie, who started out in the British small press, has written for 2000AD and is now working with artist Meghan Hetrick on this series. If you’re intrigued by the title, he’s written the latest guest Director’s Commentary piece for the Forbidden Planet International blog, revealing the story is influenced by the weirder edges of Scottish mythology and folklore.

“I’ll admit that I bled a lot for this first issue,” he reveals. “I wanted so much to make a splash, to hook every casual reader who flipped through its pages, that it almost hurt to let go of that final draft. But, a few weeks later, when the actual comic pages started to flow in from Meghan Hetrick, I knew that it was worth it and that we had something genuinely special on our hands.” The feature includes some great sample pages from the book and it looks terrific. Definitely one I’ll be picking up.

As usual, don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

• You may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are available in all good bookshops and supermarkets now.

Hysteria Graphic Freud Series Graphic Novel

Hysteria Graphic Freud Series Graphic Novel
Writer: Richard Appignanesi Artist/ Cover Artist: Oscar Zarate

“I very soon had an opportunity to interpret Dora’s nervous coughing as the outcome of a fantasized sexual situation.” An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria, often referred to as “Dora,” is one of Sigmund Freud’s most influential case studies. Focusing on the psychoanalyst’s investigation of the emotional life of a suicidal 18-year-old, it offers a fascinating insight into his methods of working and interpretation. Freud’s analysis of the patient, who he refers to as Dora, leads him to uncover a remarkably troubled and conflict-ridden family history. In this graphic novel adaptation, Richard Appignanesi and Oscar Zarate bring to life this landmark of psychoanalysis, as well as capturing the gripping story of a deeply troubled but fascinating patient.
