Something for the Weekend: US Comics (and more) on sale 23rd December 2015

Last Gang in Town #1 - Cover

It’s Christmas, so time to dash out for some last-minute stocking fillers for the comic fans in your family!

This week, my top pick this week, along with the latest issues of 2000ADArcadia, Batman 66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E. #1, simply has to be the Vertigo title Last Gang In Town #1 from Simon Oliver (FBP: Federal Bureau Of Physics) and Rufus Dayglo (Tank Girl), wrapped in a cover by Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven).

“It’s a glorious mish-mash of a mess, one that defies gravity and the laws of nature to tell a true story that never happened, but really should have,” says Simon of the book in a quick interview on the DC web site alongside Rufus, colourist Giulia Brusco, letterer Steve Wands, cover artist Rob and logo designer Rian Hughes. “Crime and art, art and crime.”

Forget what you know of England, of the “Land of Hope and Glory.” Instead, try damp and depressing, and embrace our miserable island for what it is. This story kicks off in 1976: the country coming apart at its flared corduroy seams, a decade after the Great Train Robbery, when British crime has gone decidedly soft in the middle.

In Last Gang In Town, it’s time for a new generation of criminals to rise: a band of snotty-nosed heroes driven by destiny and cheap cider, who will strike fear back into the establishment, put art back into crime and crime back into art, and pull off what will become known as the heist of the century.

This new series spans three decades, from the punk rock 1970s to the decadent ’80s and beyond, charting the rise, fall and redemption of a group of bandits that changed the face of the criminal underworld and closed the door on a legacy.

Batman 66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E. #1 - Promo Art

Oh and why Batman 66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E.? Because I’m not only intrigued by the team up, I’m also impressed someone managed to secure comic rights to do anything Man from U.N.C.L.E.-related, given how snarled up the rights on the property have been. Let’s hope this means there’s finally opportunity for a book based on the original TV series with the same sense of fun this Batman book has.

As usual, don’t forget that despite some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, Tales from the TARDISTOXIC and many others.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
