Can you laugh out loud while someone drones on for hours and hours about bloomin’ comic books? If so, Bay TV Liverpool want you to be part of the audience at Liverpool’s Central Library on Saturday 30th January 2016.
You will witness the complete history of comic books, from the very first cave wall drawing up to the very latest Mary Worth! Also, former Marvel UK and Marvel Comics staffer Tim Quinn, the guy known as one half of Dicky Howett, tells his own astonishing story of what he found while working for the comic book, magazine and newspaper publishers of Great Britain and the US.
Here at downthetubes we’ve been witness to just some of Tim’s astonishing stories of his life in comics, from his early days working as a clown in Blackpool, becoming a writer for DC Thomson’s weekly humour comic, Sparky, his battles with Marketing at Marvel UK, his work in the US for Marvel Comics and other publishers… and his valiant efforts to bring us more comics down the years – and encourage young persons to take up the challenge to create them.
We’re sure this is going to be an amazing event, but be warned! It’s not suitable for those of a nervous disposition!

Way below Liverpool University is the Science Fiction Archive, which includes the archive of John Wyndham’s work, including original manuscripts, and hundreds of thousands of neatly filed publications from the last few centuries. Tim is currently presenting a number of shows for Bay TV, including Twice Upon A Time, reading stories for young and old that Jackanory fans may enjoy; and presenting numerous music and arts shows, including About Books, which has featured a special edition of the show featuring a visit the the Science Fiction Archive at the University of Liverpool. Some of the shows are being re-presented on Bay TV’s YouTube channel.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
