This week’s 2000AD – Prog 1963 – offers a smashing start to 2016 with an intriguing opener to the new “Judge Dredd” tale, “Ghosts”, with Dredd investigating the disappearance of children supposedly selected for Judge training. Mark Sexton‘s art is great and the story by Michael Carroll draws you straight into the mystery.
The rest of the Prog is no slouch, either – Clint Langley‘s art on the latest of episode of Ro-Busters is knock out and John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra offering a smashing Strontium Dog story, “Repo Men”, with Johnny Alpha and company going undercover on an alien world. Cracking!
The big release of the week has to be The Walking Dead Issue 150 and it’s no surprise that several variant covers for this very special anniversary are on offer. Congratulations to all involved on reaching this landmark issue. Over on The Walking Dead web site, they’ve celebrated with a feature revealing the series 12 Most Shocking Moments. Brr…
Also on the US side, I picked up Batman 66 Meets The Man from U.N.C.L.E. #1 recently and enjoyed it, and #2 is out this week from writer Jeff Parker with art by David Hahn and Karl Kesel, with a cover by Michael Allred. This time out, Batman has a dangerous assignment for Batgirl: pose as a villain to infiltrate T.H.R.U.S.H., the secret organization bent on world conquest that’s enlisting evildoers! Meanwhile, Solo and Kuryakin take on the identities of two Bat-foes to find their own way into the organization. They’re all after the same vital piece of information: who is the mysterious new head of T.H.R.U.S.H.?
UK Comics – Newsagents Spotlight
As usual, don’t forget that despite some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, Tales from the TARDIS, TOXIC and many others.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.
Don’t forget Hachette, the British publisher of titles such as Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection and launched How To Draw The Marvel Way last week, available in all good newsagents.
The part work – evocative of long-established comic creation guides such as How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, still a handy guide to drawing action comics in my view, offers a step by step guide on how to learn to draw like the greats of comic book illustration. More about this new title here

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
