Each year ELCAF sees over 3000 visitors celebrate the diverse range of work produced by selected exhibitors and take part in the extensive programme of talks and workshops that livens up the heart of the festival.

To celebrate ELCAF’s fifth birthday, Nobrow are offering even more this year. Kicking off in May, they’re introducing an entire season of events, beginning with a workshop for Urban Village Fete and an exhibition at NOW Gallery by Stoke Newington-based illustrator and printmaker Margaux Carpentier for ELCAF, free drop-in workshops at Hackney Central and Dalston Libraries, Masterclasses and a joint school programme at the House of Illustration.

The ELCAF season will culminate in the Festival itself, which will feature an extended digital programme, springboard meetings and, for the first year ever, the ELCAF Award, recognising artists and publishers who are excelling in their fields by offering a selection of prizes that will support their work.

The ELCAF Award will have two categories: Best Up and Coming Artists and the Audience Award. Both winners will be chosen by a select panel of experts.

The Festival will also feature “Spingboard Meetings”, a series of 15 minute meetings with professionals who will offer advice and portfolio reviews. These meetings are free and will require booking through the ELCAF website.

Artist-in-Residence Revealed

As with every edition, ELCAF has the pleasure of inviting an internationally celebrated artist to create a unique identity for the year, and London-based French graphic designer and illustrator Jean Jullien has been announced as this year’s artist-in-residence.

Jean Jullien has quickly gained an international reputation for his pithy and expressive illustrations and his attendance will undoubtedly bring a colourful new mix to the ELCAF halls. Hailing from Nantes, he did a graphic design degree in Quimper before coming to London. He graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 and from the Royal College of Art in 2010. He works closely with the musician The Coward and his practice ranges from illustration to photography, video, costumes, installations, books, posters and clothing to create a coherent yet eclectic body of work.

In 2011, he founded Jullien Brothers, a duo specialised in moving image (jullienbrothers.com) and in 2012, he created News of the Times with Yann Le Bec and Gwendal Le Bec (newsofthetimes.tumblr.com)

Alongside Jean Jullien, ELCAF is inviting an exciting roster of international artists including Adrian Tomine, Richard McGuire, Lorena Alvarez, Dieter Braun, Biografiktion and many, many more.

Founded by Nobrow in 2012, ELCAF began as a small one-day festival and in only four years it has grown to become one of the leading festivals of its kind in the UK. Attracting over 3,000 visitors annually, ELCAF continues to spotlight emerging talent and celebrate the dynamic community of individual artists and collectives that are pushing the boundaries in their creative fields.

“We have seen an exciting growth in the field of comics and illustration here in the UK and ELCAF looks to keep pushing artists and publishers from the peripheries and into focus,” say the organisers.

“In its fifth year, ELCAF is spreading its wings to embrace children’s book illustrators and the publishers that promote their work, as well as steering a course into the world of digital arts by including an extended programme of screenings and digital installations.”
