Something For the Weekend: Sherlock Shenanigians and Wonder Woman Reborn (New Comics w/c 6/6/16)

Wonder Woman - Rebirth #1

DC Comics “Rebirth” project continues this week, with two of the creators I had the pleasure of working with back in my Marvel UK days working on separate books. Aquaman #1 is written by Dan Abnett (with art by Oscar Jimenez, cover artists Brad Walker and Andrew Hennessy, while Liam Sharp is busy not only with the digital publishing empire that is Madefire but also drawing Wonder Woman, written by Greg Rucka. The very best of luck to them both – advance order for both books have been strong.

Closer to home 2000AD Prog 1984 has some terrific strips this week, with the “Judge Dredd” story (from Michael Carroll, PJ Holden, Adam Brown and Annie Parkhouse) bubbling away nicely as Armitage tries to piece out who would gain from the death of Dredd, while Simon Davis again delivers some simply stunning pages on Pat Mills‘ “Slaine”. Plus, “Black Shuck” from Leah Moore, John Reppion, Steve Yeowell, Chris Blythe, and Ellie De Ville cranks up nicely, although just what is it with Vikings right now? We’ll be getting Noggin the Nog back on telly soon at this rate!

Over at Titan Comics, they’re naturally bigging up the launch of Sherlock: A Study in Pink. This Sherlock-inpsired manga by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, available for the first time in English has garnered a fantastic response from both fans and retailers.

Also released this week is new series Norman (following the smash-hit collected editions), and the adventures of the Eleventh Doctor continues and the antics of the Penguins of Madagascar end. Heroes: Vengeance (based on the newly relaunched TV series) is also collected into a trade paperback.

UK Newsagents Releases

Commando No 4920 – Half-Pint CommandoThere are plenty of comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including 2000ADThe Beano, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles) MegaTOXIC and many others.

Doctor Who Adventures Issue 15So let’s not get too downhearted by some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour that only those of us over a certain age remember.

Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series.

Some of you in certain areas of the country may also be able to pick up a copy of the new Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection, which is currently being road tested by Eaglemoss.

Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
