Sneak Peek: For the Love of God, Marie! by Jade Sarson

For the Love of God Marie! - Full Cover

We don’t normally post the entire cover of a book here on downthetubes, but Jade Sarson‘s For the Love of God, Marie! – out from Myriad in July – is just so darn gorgeous, how could we not?

Sex, religion, gender, and love are addressed head on in this frothy cocktail of a graphic novel, beautifully drawn and coloured by prize-winning author Jade.

Based on what we’ve seen so far – some pages below – this is a knock out-looking book with a story that’s going to pull a few heart strings – check it out on release.

At its heart, and with a big heart herself, is Marie, a spirited young woman from a religious household who is taught to love everybody. With an eye for the underdog, the bullied and the oppressed, Marie’s mission in life is to make those who are different from the norm feel loved and understood. But loving and falling in love are two very different things, and when Marie finds her heart has a life of its own, living and loving become a whole lot more complicated.

As we follow Marie’s loves from her Catholic schooldays through adulthood to motherhood, with a little help from a rainbow cast of LGBT characters, we see that Jade Sarson may be dealing with some serious issues, but with her trademark wit and lightness of touch, and gorgeous tea-stained palate, it’s a glorious romp from start to finish.

An extract from For the Love of God, Marie! won the Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition 2014, judged by Meg Rosoff, Andy Oliver, Nicola Streeten, Myriad’s Creative Director Corinne Pearlman, and Woodrow Phoenix, who describes the book as “A beautifully illustrated and dreamlike succession of fun and filth”.
