Something For The Weekend (w/c 1st August 2016): Torchwood, 2000AD and Lucky Luke!

Torchwood #1 Cover A by Tommy Lee Edwards

Torchwood #1 Cover A by Tommy Lee Edwards

It’s a busy week for Titan Comics, with the launch of NBA All-star legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s debut comic book Mycroft Holmes – focused on the early, chaotic life of the elder Holmes brother – and their new Torchwood title, written by Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman, and novelist Carole Barrowman.

Torchwood #1 continues the adventures of the smash TV show and is in continuity with the Big Finish radio dramas – and this action-adventure packed launch issue is not one to miss for either Torchwood or Doctor Who fans. Read my review here.

Both Mycroft Holmes and Torchwood recently debuted at San Diego Comic-Con to an electric reception from fans, so if you were lucky enough to have picked up your issues there, then move on and grab another new Titan title (yes, they are relentless, aren’t they). Dishonored #1 is based on the popular video game series from Bethesda. Set 12 years after the events of the first game, this series leads into the upcoming Dishonored II video game (out this month). The series charts main character Corvo’s search for an apprentice!

And there’s more: Penny Dreadful continues with Issue #3, Vikings #3, and Tank Girl: Two Girls, One Tank #3, although, sadly, we wave goodbye for now to Puss in Boots, which reaches its final issue with #4.

Over at 2000AD Prog 1992, the latest PJ Maybe story from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra is warming up nicely, with Judge Dredd on the rack, he thinks of the inveterate psychopath, except, as you’ll see, there are some deliciously nasty twists in the investigation. “Black Shuck” by Leah Moore, John Reppion, Steve Yeowell and Chris Blythe reaches a dramatic conclusion, paving the way for a whole range of sequel stories, not unnecessarily running straight after this one; and Dan Dare – sorry, I mean “Scarlet Traces: Cold War”  – might be a slow burn, but the trails are being laid for a stonker of a story, crammed with marvellous visual gags and some savage pops at the nastier elements of Britain today. Utterly brilliance from Ian Edginton and D’Israeli!

This week also sees the release of four new Cinebook titles, including the latest Lucky Luke, which has just his the 60 volume mark in the UK. Whew!

Plus, over at Dark Horse, track down the Kings Road collection, out now, if you haven’t bought the original comics. Written by Peter Hogan and drawn by Phil Winslade and Staz Johnson this collection of the ace fantasy series  includes all Dark Horse Presents chapters and the three-issue miniseries!

UK Newsagents Releases

2000AD Summer Special 2016 - CoverThere are plenty of comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including 2000AD (this year’s Summer Special is still sale), The Beano, the new Danger Mouse comic, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini Comics superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles), Mega, TOXIC and many others.

Danger Mouse Magazine Issue OnePlus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

So let’s not get too downhearted by some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour that only those of us over a certain age remember.

Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series.

Some of you in certain areas of the country may also be able to pick up a copy of the new Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection, which is currently being road tested by Eaglemoss.

Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
