Martin Baines draws new Thunderbirds Are Go strip for official comic

Thunderbirds Are Go Issue 13 - Cover

The latest issue of DC Thomson’s Thunderbirds Are Go comic – on sale in all good newsagents and supermarkets – features the first issue to include all-new comic strip from artist Martin Baines, a departure from the previous “photo story” format for the best-selling title.

The new comic strip will soon feature the series’ new villain, The Mechanic (voiced by Chris Jarman), who first appears in the show’s second series, which launches on CITV in the UK in October.

Needless to say, Martin, who was one of the contributors to the special TV Century 21 comic that was part of Network’s Supermarionation collection released in 2014, drawing the Thunderbirds strip for that, is very proud to be working on the Thunderbirds Are Go comic. He’s drawn two episodes so far and is about to start on the third.

“It has always been my long time ambition to draw this series, he says, “following in the footsteps of my hero Frank Bellamy”.

It’s great to see Martin’s strip in the comic. A professional storyboard and concept artist living in London, he’s worked extensively in the field of storyboards for advertising agencies, for clients such as Hitachi, AA, Visa and Nescafe. Beside advertising he works with publishers on a regular basis, producing images in a variety of styles, from realistic painted book jackets, to drawing comic strips and colouring the famous Garth comic strip in the Daily Mirror.

His portfolio also includes illustrating the life story of famous footballers for Match of the Day weekly, the Wallace & Gromit comic, Commando, The Beano and illustrations in People’s Friend. He’s also been known to turn his hand to Dan Dare and it was a pleasure for me to work with him on a sample “Steel Claw” strip that, sadly, didn’t get beyond concept stage.

Thunderbirds Are Go magazine is a 36-page glossy magazine, based on the hit CITV show, which gives readers the chance to become a member of International Rescue and help the Tracy brothers in their fight against the evil Hood. From their island base, the five Tracy Brothers pilot remarkable, cutting-edge Thunderbird vehicles from the depths of the oceans to the highest reaches of space – all for one purpose: to help others in need.

International Rescue’s identities may not be widely known, but their heroism is legendary. Even the devious schemes of mysterious international criminal “The Hood” can’t weaken their resolve, or stop them from battling the dangers of the year 2060.

Supported by mechanical genius Brains, stealthy operative Kayo, their jet-setting London agent Lady Penelope and her loyal driver Parker, Scott, Gordon, Virgil, John and Alan Tracy live for these three words: Thunderbirds Are Go.
