Something For The Weekend (w/c 26th September 2016): 2000AD Prog 2000 is here! Party Alert!
It’s here! It’s fantastic!
2000AD, Europe’s longest running sci-fi action comic reaches its landmark 2,000th issue this week and some of the most prominent creators ever to grace its pages have returned for a 48-page celebration bonanza.
Brian Bolland (Batman: The Killing Joke), Mick McMahon (The Last American), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), and Kevin O’Neill (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) are just some of the incredible talent to return – and this issue features the first sequential comics work by Bolland for 2000AD since 1987, as well as a brand new series by Peter Milligan (X-Statix, Hellblazer) and a poster featuring specially commissioned artwork.
Prog 2000 is available with three variant covers – newsstand customers can choose between covers by Cliff Robinson and Chris Burnham, while a special Glenn Fabry wraparound cover will be exclusively available through comic book stores via Diamond Distribution.
You can read our spoiler-free review of the Prog here. Oh, and be sure to be ready to book your tickets for the 2000AD 40th Birthday Party, taking place in London next February. Alongside signings, programming at the day-long show will also include what publisher Rebellion is calling “one-of-a-kind spectacles befitting the legacy of the finest comic book export the UK has ever produced.”
Over at Titan Comics, fresh off the smash, sell-out success of Vikings: Godhead mini-series earlier this year, superstar writer Cavan Scott (The Ninth Doctor) returns to the barbaric, violent world of Vikings for a brand new series, entitled Vikings: Uprising with phenomenal art by Daniel Indro (Doctor Who) and Kevin Enhart.
Titan also release Tank Girl Gold #1. This brand new series is the Empire Strikes Back of the new Tank Girl trilogy – from the mind of the original Tank Girl co-creator, Alan Martin. Tank Girl: Gold is illustrated by returning series artist, Brett Parson (New Romancer, Two Girls One Tank).
Last Descendants – Locus is Titan’s newest Assassin’s Creed series – written by Ian Edginton (X-Force), the series delves into the sordid underworld of Victorian London and the memories of Tommy Greyling as he hunts for the answers to a mystery that could change the world!
The four part serial spins out of the Last Descendants novel from Scholastic, and features phenomenal art by rising star Caspar Wijngaard (Limbo).
UK Newsagents Releases
There are plenty of comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including 2000AD, The Beano, Danger Mouse comic, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini Comics Marvel Collector Editions titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles), Mega, TOXIC and many others.

Don’t forget the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here), as well as available on subscription.
So let’s not get too downhearted by some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour that only those of us over a certain age remember.
Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novelseries.
Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Digital Comic Picks
