Something For the Weekend – Judge Dredd and a deadly Mummy in This Week’s New Comics in the UK (w/c 7th October 2016)

2000AD Prog 2006 - Cover

Here’s this week’s round up of new comics in British newsagents and comic shops skewed, as ever to highlighting British creators and publishers. After positive feedback to the plugs we included for some great indie titles last week ahead of the Thought Bubble Festival (Axel Automatic in particular, which we reviewed here, also got spotlighted by the national Guardian), we’ve added a “Small Press Spotlight” for titles you’ll need to order from creators direct.

On the news stand, the latest issue of 2000AD – Prog 2006 – continues the terrific “Judge Dredd: Act of Grud” from Rob Williams, with great action-packed art from Henry Flint. This has been a cracker of a story, but the Prog’s thrills don’t stop there because “Flesh” (from Pat Mills and Clint Langley) appears to be drawing to a pretty impressive finale as the dinosaur-extinction asteroid nears Earth. “Counterfeit Girl” by Peter Milligan (who also has The Mummy #1 out from Titan Comics), Rufus Dayglo and Dom Regan is a treat, too. Recommended – as ever!

Scarlet Traces TPB - Cover

Talking of things 2000AD, you’ll recall publisher Rebellion snagged Ian Edginton and D’Israeli’s Scarlet Traces a while back. The first episodes of a new story featured in 2000AD recently, but a heads up now that next week sees the release of a brand new collection of the celebrated comic book sequel to H.G. Well’s The War of the Worlds in an omnibus edition, complete with an adaptation of the original novel.

Beginning with a visionary adaptation of the seminal novel, the collection also includes the first of three stories set a decade after the Martian invasion. Great Britain has cannibalised Martian technology and now Hansom cabs scuttle along on multi-limbed crab legs, and the Martian heat-ray has become the weapon with which the British Empire dominates the world. When the bodies of several young women are found washed up on the banks of the Thames, Captain Robert Autumn and his former Sergeant-Manjor Archie Currie are drawn into a mystery that leads them from gin palaces to the corridors of power and the very Hall of the Martian King…

Small Press Spotlight

Berserkotron - Cover Berserkotron - S1 Berserkotron - S2 Berserkotron - S3Berserkotron from writer and artist David Robertson / Fred Egg Comics is the latest of quirky titles from this Dundee-based creator, a 70-page balck and white title available form fredeggcomics.bigcartel. This book collects the two parts of the “Berserkotron” story from the small press comics, both long out of print.

Daft, quirky and a fun read with cartoon-style art, it’s great to see David continue his love of the comic form, balancing stories that start out as snapshots of daily life with moments of the patently absurd. Charlie Dandelion - Cover

Gavin Pollock‘s Charlie Dandelion (available through Amazon.co.uk) is a delight. I met Gavin “in the flesh” at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, where we discussed some ideas for a cosplay-inspired Live Draw for the next Lancaster Comics Day. He very kindly sent me this collection, a tale of an unemployed, afro-sporting and eternally bemused character, dealing with the strangest Job Centre you’ll ever see run by a bizarre narcissist, who counts a talking snow leopard as a friend and finds himself assigned to work in a warehouse run by would-be alien invaders.

While the lettering needs work for future issues, the script is wonderful, with some great lines, and Gavin’s art is terrific. Well worth tracking down.
