January marks what would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday, and the first anniversary of his untimely death to cancer.
Celebrating the career of one of popular art’s most vital innovators, chameleons and talents, Moonage Daydreams – an exhibition at London’s Orbital Comics – sees 20 artists from the comic book field and beyond offer their unique take on their favourite David Bowie albums and singles.
The exhibition, organised by Robin Harman (who also organised the superb “Cover Visions” exhibition last year) opens on Friday 13th January 2017 with a launch party that kicks off at 8.00pm and runs for three weeks.
Artst involved include Dean Beattie (creator of Random Trials), New Yorker illusrator Jamie Coe, (whose debut graphic novel Art Schooled was published by Nobrow), Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven, The Can Opener’s Daughter), comics artist and illustrator Jonathan Edwards, co-creator of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival’s “Poblin” mascot, Marc Laming (King: The Phantom, Planet Hulk) and Iain Laurie (Comixtribes). All involved have created a new sleeve for the record of their choice, which will be displayed in the Orbital Gallery space, with a limited run of prints being made available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Cancer Research UK.
“I’m sure that I don’t need to tell you that the world lost one of its last great artists this year with the passing of David Bowie,” says Robin Harman. “He was a great performer, chameleon and talent, and the mark he left on the arts world is one that will doubtfully ever be surpassed. Never before have a seen such a unanimous outpouring of sadness, but also celebration on social media. He meant a lot to so many.”
