In Review: Doctor Who Adventures Issue 21 (Doctor Who meets Doctor Strangeglove?)

Doctor Who Adventures Magazine Issue 21 (Panini)

The Comic: Doctor Who Adventures is a fun-filled, action-packed magazine for girls and boys aged 6 – 13 who love Doctor Who. Aimed at a slightly younger audience than Doctor Who Magazine, it offers a crazy plunge into the wacky world of The Doctor, as he travels through time and space to battle the alien forces of evil and save planet Earth.

Doctor Who Adventures features a comic strip, text story, cartoons, stickers, prizes, fun facts about Doctor Who, space, and planet Earth, and a great Doctor Who free gift.

The Review: Released last week, the latest issue of Panini’s Doctor Who Adventures (Issue 21) is great fun, with former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel clearly enjoying himself on the comic strip (drawn by Russ Leach).

This issue comes with a free secret message set and stickers and includes series-based features (mainly about the recently-broadcast Christmas Special), a text story (written by James Hill), Grant Perkins “The Adventures of Strax and The Time Shark” and more – but for me, the strip is the main reason to pick this comic up.

Not only  does it continue the Twelfth Doctor’s adventures alongside a Mr Ed-inspired talking (alien) horse; in this issue, Andrew throws in some wonderful Doctor Strangeglove homage, as our favourite Time Lord tries to prevent mass Insecticide.

The strip is not only bonkers fun for its intended audience, older readers will just have fun spotting plundered popular culture references. Marvellous.
