Dublin-based independent comics publisher Lightning Strike Comics has announced the creative team behind their new Phantom comic, Scarlet Sapphire, and has released a smashing piece of preview art by Stephen Mooney, who is also writing the book.

The new title follows the company’s publication of a special 60th anniversary Phantom tribute last year, working in partnership with the character’s US owners, King Features. (Lightning Strike will be releasing a special eight-page commemorative Prince Valiant booklet next week, marking the 80th anniversary of Hal Foster’s much-loved character – read our tribute here)

Stephen Mooney is a New York Times best selling creator most widely known for his award-winning hit series Half Past Danger from IDW from IDW Publishing. More recently he has been working as an artist for DC Comics on popular series such as Grayson, Midnighter and Bombshells. He’s currently hard at work writing and drawing the sequel to Half Past Danger.

Scarlet Sapphire is being drawn by Robert Carey, the artist who co-founded Lightning Strike Comics and for North Bend, Ness and recently being chosen as a winner in Mark Millar’s Millarworld talent search 2017. Commenting on the new Phantom project he says it “could not be more fun if it tried.” (You really should follow the link to his Tumblr through just for the stunning Ghost Rider art he’s posted)

The book will be coloured by Dublin-based Tríona Farrell, who has worked on numerous issues series from Titan Comics, Boom!, IDW and Image Comics, including Weavers for Boom!, written by Simon Spurrier which launches in May, and the upcoming Image book Rose, which launches next month. She illustrates in her spare time.

Rounding off the team are Rob Jones, the award winning letterer and one of the founders of British Based Indie Publisher, Madius Comics (who is also a comics writer whose credits include Griff Gristle and Tragic Tales of Horrere with Mike Sambrook), and editor David Williams, a published academic researcher and lecturer who specialises in Game Development & Animation. On a day to day he is responsible for the Animation and Game Development faculties for Pulse College third level education, developing courses in Sequential Art, VFX, Games and Animation sectors.
