Myriad Comic Cuts Competition launched to create new comics-inspired TV comedy

Myriad Editions Logo 180Brighton-based publisher Myriad Editions has teamed up with the award-winning comedy television company Roughcut Television (perhaps best known as producers of The Office and The IT Crowd) in a call-out for a comedy or comedy/ drama in graphic novel form that can be developed into a comic drama series for television.

Myriad Comic Cuts is looking for strong characters and setting which can support multiple storylines to give potential for sequels.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Myriad to search for the next standout comedy or comedy drama,” says Tim Sealey, Executive Producer with Roughcut TV.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for new writers to get their work adapted for TV. We’re very excited to be expanding our slate in this way and we can’t wait to see the brilliant ideas come through the door.”

The competition is open to all cartoonists, writers and artists and Corinne Pearlman, Creative Director at Myriad Editions, is clearly delighted about the project, which complements the company’s other pioneering work in the field of graphic novel publishing.

“It is a perfect complement to Myriad’s First Graphic Novel Competition, which will be announced later this year,” she notes.

Entries to Myriad Comic Cuts may be from a single author or may be a collaboration between a writer and artist. The successful entrant will have the opportunity to develop their work with Myriad and Roughcut’s creative and editorial teams with a view to being offered a contract for publication and to develop the idea for television.

The entries for Myriad Comic Cuts will be considered by Ash Atalla and Tim Sealey, Executive Producers at Roughcut TV, and Corinne Pearlman, Creative Director, Myriad Editions. The deadline for entries is 30th September 2017.

Myriad publish contemporary and historical literary fiction; crime, especially psychological and political thrillers; graphic novels that span a variety of genres including memoir and life writing, Graphic Medicine, documentary comics and fiction; and political non-fiction.

Founded as a packager in 1993, Myriad quickly won acclaim for its series of infographic geopolitical atlases, including the flagship survey of current events and global trends, The State of the World Atlas. Arts Council England Grants for the Arts in 2009 and 2011 enabled Myriad to expand into trade publishing, and they developed a distinctive style of publishing focused on identifying and nurturing homegrown new talent.

The company publishes about three graphic novels a year, with Graphic Science by Darryl Cunningham among forthcoming releases, launching at this year’s Lakes International Comic Art Festival in October.

Recent releases include the haunting A Thousand Coloured Castles by Gareth Brookes – one of the most thought-provoking, visually unsettling graphic albums (in a good way!) – and Jade Sarson‘s brilliant For the Love of God, Marie!

As part of the mission to support new and emerging authors Myriad organise two other work-in-progress competitions, one for fiction (First Drafts) and the other for graphic novels (First Graphic Novel Competition). Both have a track record of uncovering and launching authors who progress to achieve creative and commercial success.

The independent publisher announced its merger with non-profit media co-operative New Internationalist, based in Oxford, back in May, continuing to publish under its own imprint, with Candida Lacey and Corinne Pearlman remaining publishing and creative directors respectively.
