Titan Comics has announced new details for their upcoming four-issue mini-series, Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future, written by Peter Milligan (Shade, X-Statix, Enigma) and top Spanish artist Alberto Foche.

Britain’s greatest hero latest comics incarnation debuts in October 2017, featuring a stunning cover by Christian Ward (ODY-C, Black Bolt), with variant covers from Alberto Foche and Chris Weston.

Dan Dare is one of the best-known (and loved) British comic book characters. Originally created by the Reverend Marcus Morris and visionary illustrator Frank Hampson for the weekly comic Eagle in the 1950s, Dan Dare thrilled audiences through his lengthy run in the comic, offering epic SF sagas, rip-roaring high-adventure and beautifully illustrated comic-strip art by Hampson and a slew of legendary artists including Frank Bellamy, Don Harley and Keith Watson.

Since his first appearance, Dan has returned in numerous titles, including 2000AD (drawn by a variety of artists including Massimo Beardinelli and Dave Gibbons), New Eagle, and a six-issue series from Virgin Comics by Garth Ennis and Gary Erskine. Stories starring the original 1950s incarnation continue to be published in Spaceship Away magazine and a series of Dan Dare Audio Adventures launched last year from B7 Media, to critical acclaim and awards.

In Titan Comics’ new tale, Earth and the solar system is at peace for the first time in human history – and Dan Dare doesn’t know what to do with himself. Then, a huge unknown alien vessel arrives in the solar system and obliterates a moon of Saturn in a show of strength, Dare finds himself thrust back into a new adventure that threatens not just Earth – but all life in the entire universe!

Writer Peter Milligan was at the forefront of the revolution in comics which were created for a more sophisticated, adult audience in the UK and the US in the 1980s and 90s. Shade the Changing Man for Vertigo offered a skewered look at American culture, while Enigma, Face and Rogan Gosh pushed the boundaries of what comic books could do. The hugely-popular X-Statix was a radical reworking of the X-Man paradigm that led to controversy when Milligan tried to recruit the late Diana Prince of Wales into his celebrity-obsessed bunch of heroes, making him perhaps the most hated man in Britain – at least among Daily Mail readers.

Milligan was the longest-running writer of the cult horror comic Hellblazer, and his take on Human Target inspired the TV series. His latest works include the critical hit Britannia, about an Ancient Roman detective, and a retelling of The Mummy for Hammer and Titan Comics. He is currently working on other film and non-comic book projects.

Alberto Foche‘s first work in comics was for Spain’s Wet Magazine in 1996. His other credits include work for Eros Magazine, Crónicas de Mesene: La Caida del Aguila for Dolmen Editorial, and Solano for the Diputación of Cádiz. A self-taught artist, he’s perhaps best known to comic fans outside of Spain for his work on Dreadlocks for Urban Style Publishing and his illustration work for the Mutants and Masterminds roleplaying game from Green Ronin Publishing.

• Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future #1 will go on sale in comic stores and digital platforms on 11th October 2017 for $3.99. Fans and retailers will be able order the debut issue from August’s Diamond PREVIEWS catalogue through their local comic shop
