Comics culture site Broken Frontier has announced the publication of their 2017 Small Press Yearbook, an anthology celebration of the work of BF’s ‘Six Small Press Creators to Watch’ of 2016 – Rebecca Bagley, Kim Clements, Brigid Deacon, Emily Rose Lambert, Jey Levang and Ellice Weaver (who’s also the cover artist) – who all provide stories on the loose theme of “New Horizons”.
Says Broken Frontier Editor-in-Chief Andy Oliver, “Our ‘Six to Watch’ initiatives highlight Broken Frontier’s commitment to not just small press comics coverage but to small press comics activism. The site has always had an ethos of championing the most exciting new voices on the scene and bringing them up to the next, deserved level of recognition and the Yearbook is the perfect showcase for that.”
The Yearbook launched at London’s acclaimed Gosh! Comics to a packed shop on 8th July as part of the UK and Ireland’s annual Small Press Day event, with many of the creators involved in attendance. The book also features stories by artists who began in self-publishing and whose earlier work was featured at Broken Frontier.
These include Danny Noble (illustrator of comedian and actor Adrian Edmondson’s Tilly and the Time Machine, Puffin), Grace Wilson (Saving Grace, Jonathan Cape), Rachael Smith (Artificial Flowers, Avery Hill Publishing; Doctor Who, Titan Comics), EdieOP (Maleficium, Avery Hill Publishing), Rozi Hathaway (Cosmos & Other Stories, Good Comics), Steven Tillotson (Untitled Ape’s Epic Adventure, Avery Hill Publishing), Emma Raby (The Dead Moon), Tim Bird (Grey Area, Avery Hill Publishing) and John Riordan (Sound and Vision, Dog N’ Bone).
