Ernest Chiriacka (1913-2010) is internationally known as an impressionistic painter of dramatic Western moods and the American landscape. He is one of few fine artists that successfully made the leap from illustration, leaving behind a large commercial legacy including pulp covers, pinups for Esquire, movie posters, and illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and Argosy.

I think you’ll agree his pulp work is amazing, but his work as a fine artist, particularly his Western-inspired art, is stunning.

There’s a useful bio and wonderful images spanning many areas of his work here, posted on the Casweck Galleries web site, who also offer prints of his work here in partnership with Rageon.

The brilliant Today’s Inspiration blog paid tribute to him on his passing in 2010 here (an article that includes links to other features on the same site) and there’s also a smashing album of his book covers here on Flickr
