Sliced Quarterly, an experimental comic anthology, is running a crowdfunding campaign to print its second trade paperback collection. The diversity of the strips included offers a fascinating snapshot of creative talent out there in the indie field right now and I’ll hold my hand up now and say I’ve back this edition myself.
Edited by Ken Reynolds, Sliced Quarterly is a playground for creators to experiment with the comic book narrative.
“We aim to showcase simple, authentic, literary stories told in extraordinary ways,” Ken explains. “Creators are invited to test the traditional norms of the medium, and in so doing, elevate how they connect and communicate with the reader.
“Each issue displays the value of sequential narrative art in its ability to be insightful, emotive and provocative. We publish ‘slice of life’ stories told in extraordinary ways.”
The Kickstarter campaign aims to raise funds for a second print collection is now live, collecting issues #5-8 of the experimental comic anthology – some 140 pages of comics – that have been published digitally for the last year, with a cover by Gareth A. Hopkins.
The line-up of creators (in order supplied) included is: Ben Peter Johnson, Bryony Thomson, Gareth A Hopkins, John Osborn, David Thomas, Sam Bentley, Bob Schroeder, Daniel Willcocks, Mikael Lopez, Julian Adkins, Tony Esmond, Saffron Knight, Pablo lten, Ktaiiwanita, Caleb Lindley, Daniel Ableev, Denis Vermesse, Eric Gaghan, Gregory Floch, JM Bryan, Jonathan Scott, Kim Roberts, Kyle Houston, Martin Feekins, Alan Henderson, Ben Rowdon, Brad Brooks, David Hailwood, Lukasz Kowalczuk, Jenny Brown, Raihil Mohsin, Simon Mackie, Tara Lucy, Taz, Aimee de Jongh, Frits Jonker, Tom Abbosh, Chris Dean, Steve Tanner, Alex Thompson, Tim West Jay Martin, Jim Lavery, Aljosa Tomic, Scott Melrose, Dave Snell, Adam Falp, Emily B. Owen, Adam Kindred, Chris Sides, Ethan Wiltshire, Ken Best and Ken Reynolds.
“We’re looking to raise £2,400,” says Ken, and the project has already raised some £1300 plus toward that deserved goal. “That’s enough to cover the printing, and production of the book, the rewards on offer and to deliver them to our backers.”
I’ve featured some samples of some of the strips here – and every Sliced issue to date can be read and downloaded for free on the publication’s website, so you really can try before you buy! However, the book will also include bonus material not available in the website editions.
