Comic Creator Spotlight: Martin Eden’s Zeros web comic project heads to print

Martin Eden, the creator of the much-praised British independent comic series O Men and Spandex, has a new comics project out now – Zeros, an all-ages comic about a world where everyone has a super-power.

Everyone, it seems, except a class of school-children at the Powertown Institute… But why not?

Mr Kit explains the world of Zeros

Zeros is set in a near-future world,” Martin tells us. “The series is set to explore the characters and this world, with the emphasis on characterisation.”

The strip has actually been running for a while, but he’s clearly been waiting to get a few chapters “out there” before promoting the project.

“I’m mainly running Zeros as a web-comic at the moment – releasing the story in chapters,” he explains, “but I also release the series on Comixology and Amazon, and I publish a small print run.”

While the children in the story may start out without super powers, it isn’t spoiling things to reveal that this situation soon changes – and the reason for their apparent lack of abilities is quite intriguing, but you should read the strip to find out why.

The strip is a fun read – super powers may be its gimmick, but there’s some great characters developing, and some of the powers in evidence in the strip have a darker edge to them than others. As with his previous work, Martin’s already throwing various story strands into the mix as the cast go through some unexpected changes, and there’s plenty of hints that all is not rosy at Powerton Institute.

“With Zeros, I intend to explore important issues – racism, LGBTQ issues, gender politics, bullying, mental health issues,” Martin hints (and he’s already tackling school bullying full on) “but the comic will be accessible to all.

“I’m really excited about Zeros and I’ve got some interesting plans for it – with lots of twists on the way!”
