Comics @ Aye Write!: Glasgow’s Book Festival 2018

The Glasgow book festival Aye Write!  has announced its line-up for 2018 and as usual it includes a selection of comics events. These all take place in either the Mitchell Library or the CCA in central Glasgow over the weekend of 24/25 March 2018.

Darryl Cunningham: Graphic Science
24th Mar 2018
11:30AM – 12:30PM
CCA
Tickets: £6
It’s not what you think! Science is filled with wondrous discoveries from great names – Newton, Darwin, Einstein – but what about the names you don’t know? So much has been achieved in the greatest fields of discovery – physics, engineering, botany – by those whose names have been forgotten. Darryl Cunningham’s gorgeously illustrated Graphic Science gives a platform, a page and voice to seven humans who have been instrumental in their fields, including Mary Anning, fossil hunter and palaeontologist and Nicola Tesla, inventor, electrical engineer and physicist. Come learn more about their lives, their struggles and their greatest achievements.

Grace Wilson: Saving Grace
24th Mar 2018
1:15PM – 2:15PM
CCA
Sharply funny, and hilariously grim, Saving Grace is a graphic memoir from cartoonist and illustrator Grace Wilson. Saving Grace takes a wry but unflinching look at exactly how hard it is make a living as an artist today (and find a flat!) in London. Join Grace as she talks to Creative Scotland’s Sasha de Buyl about flats, friendship and making it as an artist today. ‘The funniest and most perspicacious memoir I’ve read this year’ Rachel Cooke, Observer

Hannah Berry
24th Mar 2018
6:30PM – 7:30PM
Mitchell Library
Join Hannah Berry as she chats to Creative Scotland’s Sasha de Buyl, about satire, conspiracy, and making comics where the villains don’t wear capes. In Livestock, Hannah Berry melds alternate reality with political satire and imagines a world in which the celebrity rumour mill and the political machine work side-by-side to bend, shape and obfuscate the truth. What’s chilling is how close this razor-sharp graphic novel hits to home, when compared to current global Politics. Join Hannah Berry as she chats to Creative Scotland’s Sasha de Buyl, about satire, conspiracy, and making comics where the villains don’t wear capes. “Livestock is that rare thing: book that has only grown more essential in the gap between its inception and its publication.” – THE GUARDIAN

BHP: Full Colour Comics
25th Mar 2018
1:15PM – 2:15PM
Mitchell Library
Join the team behind Full Colour, BHP Comics’ mentoring programme for young Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic comics creators, as they discuss the Full Colour anthology – the collection of work made during the programme. Chaired by co-project lead Nyla Ahmad, the young creators will discuss inclusion in the arts, creating comics and how the mentoring programme has impacted them.

Nicola Streeten and Kate Charlesworth – Deeds not Words: 100 Years of Voting, Thinking, Drawing Women
25th Mar 2018
4:45PM – 5:45PM
Mitchell Library
Join acclaimed cartoonist Kate Charlesworth (The Guardian, Sally Heathcote: Suffragette) and Nicola Streeten, author of The Inking Woman, as they discuss history, cartooning, feminism and the celebration of female artists. In the hundred years since women first won the right to vote, our society has changed immeasurably. Women have contributed hugely to cartooning and graphic novels, from the political cartoons of the suffragettes to the autobiographical comics redefining the genre today.

In addition to the above Aye Write has a children’s festival called Wee Write! which runs three weeks before the main festival. The majority of Wee Write events are schools only, including two workshops by local creators Metaphrog, however some are open to the public and on Saturday 3 March the junior festival will be welcoming Beano artist Jim Glen for a talk and workshop.

Beano: Cartoon Capers
3rd Mar 2018
11:00AM – 12:00PM
Mitchell Library
For 7+ years
Tickets: £5
Celebrate the 80th birthday of Britain’s longest running children’s comic, in this fun-filled illustrated talk and comic workshop – Beano style! Jim Glen, comic artist and writer, who has written and drawn lots of pages for the Beano, will have you laughing and drawing your favourite Beanotown characters to take home.
