Sneak Peek: Permanent Press by Luke Healy

Permanent Press - Cover

Permanent Press by comic creator Luke Healy is now available for pre-order from Avery Hill Publishing and the book will debut at the Dublin Comic Arts Festival in April.

Luke is depressed, afflicted by a severe case of metaphoritis and deadlines that don’t really exist.

Afraid of being forgotten by the comics community and unable to find motivation in anything besides jealousy, he sets out to create an award-winning comic that will remedy all of his problems.

Exploring themes of art and existence through worlds of worlds and numbers, Luke Healy’s new graphic novel includes the Ignatz and Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize nominated story, “The Unofficial Cuckoo’s Nest Study Companion.”

This is the second graphic novel from London-based Luke, a graduate of Dublin City University, where he studied journalism, and The Center for Cartoon Studies where he earned an MFA in Cartooning. His comics have been published by VICE, The Nib, Medium, A24, Nobrow, Irene, Maple Key and Seven Days.

He also works professionally as a colourist and colour flatter and have contributed to: Something New by Lucy Knisley, Dinosaur Empire and Earth Before Us: Book 2 by Abby Howard, and Bad Mask and Solar System by Jon Chad.

Many downthetubes readers will recall the praise for his first graphic novel, published by NoBrow, How to Survive in the North, not least from our very own Tony Esmond, who described it as “breathtakingly powerful” – a journey of love and loss, skilfully weaving together the true life historical expeditions of Ada Blackjack and Robert Bartlett in 1912 and 1916 with a contemporary fictional story

DCAF is a quarterly show celebrating small press comics. To the organisers of DCAF, small press means creator-owned, independent comics, including everything from self-published, photocopied zines to professionally printed graphic novels such as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Avery Hill Publishing is the sponsor for the April 2018 show.
