Camille Aubry is a Bristol-based French illustrator and graphic novel artist who recently released Toddler Moments, a self-published book of cartoons about a toddler and his mother.

Camille is a keen observer, seeing any social unit as a micro-society – and that includes the one of the nuclear family with her graphic novel A Journey To Motherhood, long listed for the Laydeez do Comics Prize 2018.

As a side project to this long form graphic novel her self-published book of cartoons ‘Toddler Moments was selected as part of the April line-up for the Laydeez do Comics event and was recently described in by Andy Oliver over on Broken Frontier as a “witty spin on the trials of parenthood”.

“What I immediately noticed about Camille Aubry’s work was its versatility in terms of scope and the subject matter on display,” Andy notes.

“…Toddler Moments is perhaps not, technically, sequential art – consisting as it does of around thirty mainly individual cartoons. They trace the trials, tribulations and triumphs of bringing up a small child as they first begin to discover and interact with their environment. In combination, though, these individual vignettes do build up into a charming and amiable narrative in their own right and there are occasional diversions into sequential imagery within their number.”

Camille studied architecture before completing the MA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts. Her architectural training has contributed to ground her art practice in the documentation of social and urban micro-activist initiatives, where the city landscape is either the background or the subject of her stories.

She’s a founding member and official illustrator of the French multidisciplinary collective Sans plus Attendre, with whom she has worked and exhibited throughout France and mainland Europe.

Toddler Moments costs £5 (+ post), buy it here on Camille’s web site.
