Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar awarded MBE for services to literature

Comic writer and film producer Mark Millar has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

He’s one of five people awarded for services to literature and drama in the list and says he is starting to feel “very respectable”.

Millar, whose credits include 2000AD, CLiNT, Superman, Kick-Ass and much more, told the Scottish Herald newspaper he was surprised to have been selected for the honour. He said: “These kind of honours you usually see going to other people, so its nice. I got an honorary doctorate last year so I am starting to feel very respectable. I want my kids to write MBE on my father’s day card.”

On becoming part of the establishment, Millar said “that is the worry. Part of the thing of being a writer is that you should always be on the outside but I suppose these honours are how the establishment tries to embrace everyone.”

Miller, who also says he is looking forward to visiting Buckingham Palace with wife Lucy, is busy with a number of projects, not least of them publicising the upcoming release of Kick Ass 2 in August, as well as working on a film version of Secret Service, the strip he created with Dave Gibbons.

“I never get a chance to sit back and feel satisfied,” he told the Herald of his hectic work schedule. “I do remember what it is like to be skint when I was 19 and living with my cat. It would eat one day and then I would eat the next.”

Speaking to his fans on Twitter, Mark is a bit more laid back about his various honours, which include the doctorate he gained last year.

“It’s nice to now be Dr Mark Millar MBE, but my dream is still to be Space-Commander Mark Millar…” he quipped.

Congratulations to him and other great creative talents on the honours list, who include actor Tony Robinson, Rowan Atkinson and Julian Glover.
