Actor Jim Broadbent and artist Dix talk about their new graphic novel “Dull Margaret” in London this week

Dull Margaret at Gosh Comics - 26th June 2018

London’s Gosh Comics host an event with actor Jim Broadbent and  artist Dix tonight (Tuesday 26th June 2018) to discuss their new graphic novel Dull Margaret with Paul Gravett.

Copies of the Gosh! exclusive Dull Margaret Bookplate Edition will be available on the night.

Academy Award-winning actor (and some might say national treasure) Jim Broadbent has turned his hand to a graphic novel , teaming with Dix, creator of of The Guardian strip “Roll Up! Roll Up!” and the downright creepy graphic novel Klaxon (with Si Spencer), to present a tale that finds its start in the Pieter Bruegel the Elder 16th Century painting Dulle Griet, with its striking image of a breast plated woman with a sword in one hand in front of the mouth of hell.

Published by Fantagraphics, Dull Margaret leads a miserable life hunting slippery, slimy eels to sell at the marketplace. In town, she finds that she does not belong: the locals shun her, steal from her, and send her away to her crude shack far away from civilisation. Fed up with the cruel world, she decides to take fate into her own hands, mixing a witch’s brew to bring her friendship and riches.

But she soon learns to be careful what she wishes for, as this powerful magic sends her down a series of shocking and gruesome twists and turns in this intense, bleak, and darkly humorous graphic novel…

“I love the image of this strong, intense woman striding determinedly across the landscape,” Jim told The Guardian back in 2016, where he revealed that at first he wanted to to make a film of the story, but said that “having garnered a lot of interest in the idea of making a film, it was impossible to find anyone to put up the quite large sum of money required”. And so the notion of a graphic novel emerged.

“I come from Lincolnshire and have long been fixated on the flat coastal marshes, and I wanted to bring those two elements together in a film script. The story began to unfold from there, incorporating images from more of my favourite artists: Goya’s witches, Daumier’s pictures of travelling players, Rembrandt’s flat, low country landscapes.

“About the time I was writing, I fell for DIX’s cartoon strip, Roll Up! Roll Up!, in the Guardian. I felt we shared a particular sort of dark humour. The notion that Margaret could be realised in a graphic novel came from then,”

Jim Broadbent and Dix will be at Gosh! to discuss their work with noted comics scholar Paul Gravett, from the genesis of the project through to their collaborative process. There’s no need for tickets or reservations, seating will allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gosh! Comics are offering a Gosh! Exclusive Bookplate Edition of Dull Margaret, available to buy on the night. If you can’t make it along but would like a copy, you can pre-order now via the shop’s webstore.
