Authorised Nelson Mandela comic biography gets re-promoted

Nelson Mandela Authorised Comic

As the world holds its breath as he battles illness, UK distributors Gazelle have re-promoted the authorised Nelson Mandela comic.

Nelson Mandela was called a terrorist, forced into hiding, captured, threatened with the death penalty and eventually thrown into jail for twenty-seven years, but nothing could stop him from fighting to liberate his country from the evil of apartheid. A hero in the struggle against a terrible regime, he never gave up. Even when he was a prisoner, he worked secretly with his comrades to undermine the oppressive apartheid government.

The comic book, first released in 2008 by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and published by Jonathan Ball, tells the story of Mandela’s birth and childhood, his struggle against apartheid and oppression, his 27 years incarcerated in prison on Robben Island, and his eventual rise as the first democratically elected leader of South Africa.

Comprising eight chapters, the book is an amalgamation of eight individual comics that were circulated for free to South African schoolchildren between 2005 and 2007.

It’s the story of a young herd boy who was to grow up to become a lawyer, a freedom fighter, South Africa’s first democratically elected president and the beloved grandfather of a nation.

The series was a project of the Foundation’s Centre of Memory, and was aimed at reaching young South Africans with the story of the life and times of Nelson Mandela, in accessible form. It drew on a wide range of published work, but also made use of previously unused archival material as well as formal and informal interviews with individuals who appear as characters in the story.
