Superheroes take over Glasgow today in bid to boost comics readership by publisher Trongate

Trongate Publishing Comic World Launch

Superheroes both on the page and in the flesh will be out in force today at the Cineworld Cinema in Glasgow’s Silverburn Shopping Centre. Local comic book publishers Trongate Publishing will be there with cosplayers to celebrate the release of Incredibles 2 and hand out free comics to cinema goers as they go in to see Pixar’s latest blockbuster.

Trongate Publishing was launched this year by three comic book writers: Gordon Robertson,Luke Halsall and Gordon Mclean. Their aim is to create comics that mix the best of local and international talent and show the public what comics are capable of and get more people reading them, especially younger readers.

“Comic book culture is everywhere these days,” says Gordon Robertson, “nowhere more so than at the cinema where films like Black Panther, The Avengers, and Justice League dominate the box office.

“Everyone knows these characters but how many people still read comics? We want to help change that.”

Comics WorldThe free comic the Trongate founders will be handing out on Saturday to tie in with the launch of Incredibles 2 is the debut issue of a family-friendly anthology called Comics World. It will feature a mix of short stories and exclusive previews.

Comics World has a lot of different types of stories in it,” says Gordon Mclean. “There’s a superhero comedy, a family drama, a twisted fantasy and a cartoony story about goblins.

“We want to show people that yeah, superheroes are great, but there also so much more to comics and no matter what kind of stories you like there’s comics out there for you. We hope that after reading Comics World, people will be inspired to go online or visit their local comic book shop and start seeing what else is out there.”

The Trongate trio will be accompanied by a group of cosplayers dressed as various characters from both comics and films.

“We’ll have free comics and the chance to get your photo taken with some real world heroes before going in to see Incredibles 2,” says Luke Halsall. The Incredibles has always been one of my favourite films. A gateway to comic books. And we can be a gateway too.”
