Doctor Who Infinity is a new game coming to PC, iTunes and Google Play next month, featuring art by a number of creators well known for their work on the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip – and details of the third storyline, The Lady of the Lake, featuring the Tenth Doctor, were recently revealed.

The Lady of the Lake will be available along with previously revealed episodes, The Dalek Invasion of Time, featuring the Twelfth Doctor, and The Orphans of the Polyoptra, featuring the Third, when the game launches on PC and mobile this August.

Three additional stories, one featuring the Tenth Doctor, are slated to launch in 2018, with more adventures to follow.

Among the creators whose stories have yet to be revealed is one drawn by 2000AD artist Patrick Goddard.

Doctor Who Infinity will introduce an innovative new platform for the delivery of episodic, comic-book style game adventures, and the plots of three episodes of the game have been revealed so far.

The multi-story game is packed with engaging, original Doctor Who stories for players to play through and enjoy – and each adventure will feature its own unique art style and author.

The game is the brainchild of Tiny Rebel Games under official license from BBC Studios in collaboration with Seed Studio (a Taiwan studio that is co-developing the project), along with a broad team of UK-based talent including well-known Doctor Who actors, writers and artists. Cardiff-based, award-winning audio designer and composer Stafford Bawler is providing audio direction. It will feature five original stories in all, building on the addictive puzzle gameplay of the team’s previous title, Doctor Who: Legacy, with the aim of immersing players in comic book style puzzle adventures.

Doctor Who: Legacy, released in 2013, quickly became one of most popular Doctor Who games of all time with over 2.5 million players and broadly spans the history of Doctor Who with every Doctor, hundreds of allies, companions and monsters and includes extended universe content from Big Finish, Titan Comics and BBC Books.

Still popular four years later, the game continues to add new content weekly and has well over 120 hours of gameplay.

Doctor Who Infinity - The Dalek Invasion of Time

Doctor Who Infinity is being funded as a joint effort between the Welsh Government’s Media Investment Budget and British game publisher/developer Double Eleven Limited, who say they will be offering support throughout the title’s development.

Tiny Rebel Games was previously based in Los Angeles, but the founders moved to Wales to be closer to their family (and sister company Tiny Rebel Brewery), where BBC Wales creates the Doctor Who TV series.

“When we moved our business and family here last year, to where my husband and business partner grew up, we found a nascent industry in games that was ripe for growth,” Executive Producer for Tiny Rebel Game Susan Cummings told GamesIndustry.biz last year.

“There weren’t many teams but what there was, was a great deal of veteran talent in various relevant disciplines. We were really excited to find that a great deal of the creative talent we needed could be found right on our doorstep.

“I think Doctor Who fans everywhere are going to be amazed with how we have taken everything we have learned from making the award-winning gameplay of Doctor Who: Legacy,” she says, “and brought it to the next level in every way imaginable.”

Obviously, the team don’t want to spoil any surprises for fans, but Susan has revealed there will be many differences revealed at launch.

“Several of the stories are set in Wales – not surprising as Doctor Who films in Cardiff,” observes creative director Lee Cummings. “We have a story set in Flat Holm and a story set in Barry Island. And quite a few of our writers and artists, all world-class talent, reside in Wales as does our audio designer, Stafford Bawler – who notably won awards for his design of the audio for Monument Valley.”

“This isn’t a sequel, this is a new platform for delivery of stories written by well-known Doctor Who writers,” Susan Cummings told Radio Times.

“Whilst the core mechanic of manipulating detachable gems is still present, we’re going massively beyond what we’ve done – or honestly what anyone has done – to create rich narratives that our players will engage with in a wide variety of ways, to experience Doctor Who stories like never before.”
