Soaring Penguin Press, publisher of the anthology Meanwhile and a range of graphic novels that includes Emma Vieceli and Malin Ryder’s BREAKS, has a new director.
The independent publisher has made an offer to Eisner-nominated writer and editor Tim Pilcher to join John Anderson as co-owner of the publishing house, which has been accepted.
Pilcher, whose previous positions have included Assistant Editor at Vertigo Comics, Commissioning Editor at Ilex Press, and Humanoids’ UK Liaison, has begun work for Soaring Penguin, providing marketing services as well as sourcing appropriate material for future publications.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Tim on board,” says company director, John Anderson. “He brings insight and an understanding of the publishing industry that’s been sorely needed to take us to the next level.”
“It’s a real honour to join the Eisner-nominated Soaring Penguin Press,” says Tim. “I have been a fan of their publications for many years and I look forward to helping grow the company’s profile and to seek out new collaborations with the cream of the comics community in the coming years.
“We are living in a new Golden Age of graphic novel diversity,” he adds, “and I see Soaring Penguin as being at the forefront of this exciting new wave.”
In October, Anderson will be moving to Vancouver, Canada to open the North American office of the publishing company.
“Historically, we’ve published a number of Canadian and American creators. It just makes sense to have a presence closer to the creators”, he says.
“With John based in North America and myself in the UK we are looking to expand our publishing list and to ensure the company goes from strength to strength, “ agreed Pilcher.
The company’s recent titles include the award-winning graphic novel Sugar – a disturbing, darkly humorous tale by Serge Baeken, translated by Michele Hutchison. Later this year they will published the stunning adventure story Daisy Blackwood – Pilot for Hire: The Cursed Island, a new collection of Ryan Howe‘s popular web comic.
The next issue of Meanwhile, featuring a special guest Strangehaven story by comic genius and a cover by Frazer Irving is in the works, alongside the finale to Martin Simpson‘s “The Needleman”, Mark Stafford and David Hine‘s “The Bad Bad Place”, Ginny Skinner’s “Gail Key’s Psychic Lost Item Helpline”.
