“Bringing Imagination Into View” exhibition exploring concept art closes tomorrow in Los Angeles

If you’re in Los Angeles this week, then there’s just still time to catch the Bringing Imagination Into View exhibition at the VAMA Gallery, presenting concept art, storyboards, graphic design, scenic, matte paintings, and other production artwork for live action filmed entertainment by members of the Art Directors Guild, Local 800 organised and curated by Professor Amarpal Khanna.

While the Gallery does offer some of its exhibitions online, unfortunately, despite the show’s title, this is no currently one of them, but the Art Directors Guild has released some photographs, and there are more on the exhibition page.

“It’s emerging ahead, but you can’t quite make it out. It’s a world you haven’t yet visited,” says the Gallery of the exhibition’s content. ”A neighbourhood that seems unfamiliar, or a vista you’re taking in for the first time. You’re encountering the expression of someone’s vivid imagination… but it takes an ‘art department’ to help you see it come to life.”

The art department is the team of hardworking individuals responsible for creating the overall look of a television show or feature film, as determined by the director. Together, they plan, design, and guide a creative process that helps bring the set to life, being mindful of every detail that can support the overall vision.

At “Bringing Imagination Into View” you will experience the process firsthand and see the artwork that helped make some of your favorite places and characters into reality. Welcome to the future, taking shape before your very eyes.

Because of their amazing work, you can be transported to new places and environments. You can visit locations you haven’t seen and become immersed in realities you hadn’t previously imagined…

Recently renovated in 2020, the VAMA Gallery, which is generously supported by the LACC Foundation, has moved from an old chemistry building into its proper home of Da Vinci Hall as part of the Da Vinci Hall Modernisation project. The 65,920 square-foot building is home to the Art and Architecture, Art gallery, Journalism, Photography and Ceramics programs.

• Bringing Imagination Into View, Da Vinci Hall; 1st Floor, VAMA Gallery, 855 N Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90029 USA | Parking available in Lot 4 | Opening Hours: Monday, 10.00am – 2.00pm, Tuesday – Thursday: 10.00am – 4.00pm | You can also explore exhibits online here – unfortunately, despite its title, not this one!
