Could You Run An Independent Bookshop? Now’s Your Chance…

October Books, Southhampton - InteriorLooking for a big challenge? The owners of Southampton-based October Books are looking for an energetic group of people who would like to take over the running of the bookshop.

Founded in 1977 and now based on Portswood Road in Southampton, October Books a not-for-profit co-operative radical neighbourhood bookshop,  selling general popular fiction, non-fiction and children’s books, alongside their traditional range of specialised radical books and magazines. Any money they make is ploughed back into the business.

They trade independently from any political organisation, and seek to promote a fair and equal society.

“Our workers and volunteers are from many different backgrounds,” says a team spokesperson on their web site,  noting the shop’s specialty areas in social issues, adoption, humanities and political issues, “and they bring diversity to the shop, so everyone feels at home in October Books.”

Over the years, October Books have expanded their range to greeting cards, organic and fair-trade foods and green household items.

Existing staff are retiring and emigrating and want to pass the shop as a going concern onto a new group, who will need a range of skills including, sales, customer service, books and finance.

You’ll also need to be happy to work as a coop and subscribe to the radical traditions and ethos of the shop.

“We’re looking to get applications from groups,” say the current team, “however we welcome applications from individuals who are interested in being put in touch with others to enable you to mount a group bid.”

If you’re interested, follow this link for more information and to download a prospectus (Word document link) intended to give an outline of October Books.

If you wish to apply, download and fill in an application of interest form (Word document link) . Applications can be returned in shop or through this email: info[at]octoberbooks.org

• All applications of interest must be returned by the bank holiday on Monday 2nd May 2016. October Books will then be inviting all shortlisted applicants for a meeting on Saturday the 14th May 2016
