Doctor Who: Panel to Panel probes Comic Strip Companion author Paul Scoones

Episode 136 of the excellent Doctor Who: Panel to Panel podcast includes an interview with Doctor Who comic expert Paul Scoones, author of the indispensable The Comic Strip Companion, a series of guide books charting the chronological history of Doctor Who in comics.

In addition to the Comic Strip Companion, Paul’s worked as a freelance contributor for BBC Worldwide, researching and writing production information text for the Doctor Who DVD range. He’s appeared as an interview subject on several DVDs, discussing Doctor Who comics, and is the former editor and publisher of Time Space Visualiser, an award-winning fan journal. He also helped discover and successfully arranged the return of a lost Doctor Who film print to the BBC.

In the interview, Paul talks to show host Jeremy Bement about his latest work on the recently-released Doctor Who Season 22 Blu-Ray, and how changing access to original production paper work has led to new discoveries about the making of the show.

The first volume of Paul’s excellent Comic Strip Companion, covering 1964 – 1979, was published by Telos Publishing Ltd in 2012, and Paul reveals he’s 500 pages into his second volume, covering 1979 – 1990. Fingers crossed, Paul will be able to complete his work in due course.

Paul has some great perspectives on the opportunities and problems when it comes to new “classic collections” of Doctor Who comics, including early Doctor Who Weekly back up strips and Countdown stories, and has some suggestions for how they could best be represented.

One of these, as mentioned many times before, are the problems involved in reprinting strips featuring creator-owned monsters, such as the Daleks, which would indeed carry additional costs, as Paul speculates.

Jeremy also checks out the latest Titan Doctor Who comic, #3 of Empire of the Wolf, out in a collection in May, and goes back to watch Scream of the Shalka, the BBC’s reinvention of Doctor Who written by Paul Cornell, starring Richard E. Grant.
