Kev F Sutherland’s tempts us all with“Comic Tales from the Bible”

After successfully transforming a number of William Shakespeare’s plays into modern comic stories, writer and artist Kev F Sutherland, has turned his hand to humorous adaptations of five classic Bible stories, in Comic Tales From The Bible.

Best known for his work on BEANO and Marvel Comics, Kev has created a full colour 90-page graphic novel, originally commissioned by Bible Society, the story format and cover design a delicious tip of the hat to American EC comics of the 1940s and 50s.

Offered in this collection is “The Book of Esther”, the Purim story as a Disneyesque comedy adventure, in which Mordecai and Esther have to fend off the threat of extermination by the evil Haman.

In “The Book of Ruth”, we discover how Ruth the Moabite gets to marry into the tribe of Israel, with smutty innuendo and threshing.

How one lad from a big family gets given a colourful coat (not technicolour, that’s copyright) and rises to become the greatest administrator in ancient Egypt is told in “The Story of Joseph”.

In “The Story of Rahab the Prostitute” (did we mention this book is suitable for readers aged eight and older?), find out how Rahab and her family survive the destruction of the walls of Jericho.

Finally, there’s “Jael Wife of Heber” to savour, Jeeves and Wooster author PG Wodehouse’s favourite Bible tale. Spoiler alert: involves a tent peg through the skull! (Oh, wait, you saw the cover…)

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
