As autumn begins to bite and scientists involved in analysing upper atmosphere activity start comparing its current status with last year’s and suggest we could be in for a grim and cold winter, what better time to have news of this year’s Malta Comic Con arrive in my inbox?

Organised by Wicked Comics this annual event – now in its eighth year – will be held on Saturday 3rd December (10.00am – 6.00pm) and Sunday 4th December (11.00am – 7.00pm) 2016, taking place at the south end of the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in Ta’ Qali (next to the Millennium Stand).

Established in 2006, the MFCC is Malta’s largest indoor multi purpose venue and is home to some of the best events on the Island.

Malta Comic Con LogoLast year’s event was tremendous fun, a smashing opportunity to not only meet fellow British creators for the first time and catch up with some old friends, but also meet a huge number of terrific European creators, including many from Malta itself. You can read my account of last year’s event here, but suffice to say, if you fan a fantastic mix of coms and winter sun, then you should seriously consider giving this event a go. The organisers are brilliant, the Maltese welcoming and the event itself, mixing comics panels with workshops, cosplay, gaming and more, is simply smashing.

“The Malta Comic Con continues to be the most popular pop culture event on the Island and the biggest platform for Maltese creators to showcase their skills, sell their creations and interact with their fans,” enthuses Chris Le Galle, co-founder of Wicked Comics – and his opinion, I’d argue, is entirely justified.

“The continuous presence of some of the leading names in the comic industry and up and coming creators form all over the world continues to aid the development of the Maltese Comic Scene,” he continues.

“The Malta Comic Con has also developed a reputation for being one of the most exciting destinations for comic symposium and each year more creators seek to be part of this event. Thanks to all those who were and continue to be, in some capacity involved with the Malta Comic Con, the convention has grown to the extent that finding the right venue to host it in has become a challenge worthy of an Avengers and Justice League cross over. Although help from fictitious characters was never going to materialise, one thing we could count on was the understanding and support offered by Ms. Anita Mifsud and the rest of the MFCC crew who provided us with the perfect venue to host our convention in.

“We’re super excited about the possibilities the new venue offers us and would like to take this opportunity to thank both Ms. Mifsud and the rest of MFCC crew as well as all those who hold the Malta Comic Con at heart and promise to do our best to deliver the best show yet.”

“The intimate and friendly atmosphere prevalent at the Malta Comic Con ensures that our visitors can spend quality time with their favourite creators who are always happy to chat, sign, sketch and create commissioned artwork for their fans,” Chris adds. “As customary, we will once again provide a varied guest roster of professional writers and artists who have worked on a number of popular characters for all the major comic publishers as well as others who have been publishing quality independent books.

“With virtually no queueing the Malta Comic Con provides the ideal platform for fan-creator interaction. Complementing our guests will be a number of up and coming creators from abroad as well as a plethora of talented local creators.”

Alongside a huge line up of yet-to-be-announced comic creators, the official Malta Comic Con Cosplay competition and the Fat Spidey Roaming Cosplay Awards will be returning. In addition to the various skits performed by fabulous cosplayers, Marianne Galea and her Fantasy Showgirls will also be performing themed dance routines. Professional photographers will be available on both days for everyone in attendance who wishes to have some quality pictures taken.

The video game area will once again be buzzing with activity ranging from retro to currents gaming and the fan favourite competitions will also be returning to determine the best gamers in Malta.

“There will also be more table top gaming than there has ever been before,” says Chris. “Along with a number of gaming clubs and exciting game developers, the popular war gaming organisation W.A.R.S will also be present running a variety of introductory table-top and role playing games. So both hardcore gamers and beginners can join the fun.”

Fans can also look forward to much more exciting and interactive activities such as quizzes, sketch challenges, work shops, informative and entertaining talks, Q&As and discussion panels featuring a number of professional guests and moderated by leading pop culture journalists!

Some of Malta Comic Con’s guests’ majestic artwork will also be exhibited during the show and to round things off nicely one of the Island’s most popular comics retailers, Pandora’s Box Collectibles will be joining a number of other retailers in offering an assortment of comic related memorabilia.

In other words, there will be something fun for everyone!

Wicked Comics will also be offering a number of packages for fans wishing to travel to the Malta Comic Con from abroad, which include heavily discounted accommodation rates and local transport from hotel to convention centre. Similarly Wicked Comics have a number of packages tailored for foreign creators who wish to exhibit at the Malta Comic Con including heavily discounted tables.
