Crowdfunding Spotlight: SHRIEEEK! Special – All Dell Breaks Loose!

Just launched on Kickstarter is a SHRIEEK! Special from David Metcalfe-Carr, showcasing the art of comic industry stalwart, Dell Barras.

Shrieeek! has already had five regular issues successfully funded on Kickstarter, and an Annual and previous Special, too – but this latest edition surely takes the horror anthology to an all-new level, offering seven intriguing stories by some great British indie writers, in a 52-page US format full colour book.

A designer, animator, and storyboard artist for film and television, Dell Barras should need no introduction to many downthetubes readers. Living today in Panorama City California, He’s been drawing comics for five decades, his amazing career launching in his native Philippines, initially working with Nestor Redondo, who hired him as art director on his Superyor komiks, followed by Mars Ravelo, who hired him to work for Atlas and Gasi titles such as Ang Taong Isda.

Moving to the United States, he initially worked with Romeo Tanghal on DC Comics titles, followed by work for Marvel. His credits include titles such as Green Arrow, Batman, The Incredible Hulk and Conan the Barbarian.

He also worked with Neal Adams for five years, penciling and inking for his Continuity Comics.

Then, back in the 1990s, Paul Neary hired him to work on several projects for Marvel UK, where he took over from Liam Sharp on Death’s Head II and provided art on issues of Motormouth and Killpower, Dark Angel, and more.

When parts of the comics industry imploded in the mid 1990s, he switched to animation and now works as a storyboard artist and designer, working for Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Disney, Fox, Marvel Films, Cartoon Network and Hanna Barbara, with credits on Conan: Red Nails, Transformers the Movie, Defenders of The Earth and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, amongst others.

More recently, Dell has returned to comics, working on titles such as Flare and League of Champions for Heroic Publishing.

(If you’re a fan of his work down the decades, you may want to check out The Art of Dell Barras, published last year).

To celebrate the legend that is Dell Barras, now seeking funding is the first US sized, full colour issue of Shrieeek!, featuring Dell’s art on several stories, and its modest target already looks well on course to get smashed.

Two have been previously published in Shrieeek!, but never in colour.

“When I started Shrieeek! I never in my born days thought I would be contacted by a comics maestro offering to draw strips for me,” says publisher David Metcalf-Carr. “But I was, and that comics legend is Mr Dell Barras.

“All the strips, bar one, have been drawn, I will be lettering and colouring through November and December so we should be on target to release this SHRIEEK! Special for an end of January 2026 release.”
