PSYComics will launch a Kickstarter for SoulBreaker by Laurence Allison, Warwick Fraser Coombe and Paul McCaffrey next month, an “allegory of the threat of losing our ability to Imagine”, a powerful story of rebellion.

As with all PSYComic’s publications, this tiny indie publishing company’s newest offering, following hot on the heels of the stunning Odyssey-inspired titles Circe and In Defiance of the Gods, has something to say about the human condition.
This time, writer Laurence Alison wants to make us think about why we need an imagination, why we need creativity, why we need to dream and to make us think about how horrifying it would be if these qualities are criminalised and taken up only by machines.
Part Black Mirror, part Patrick McGoohan’s The Prisoner, SoulBreaker is a tale of rebellion and of the sovereignty of individuality.

The new, thought-provoking story leans into the Universe Laurence previously created, including WarFighter – in which he told the tale of St George as a horror Sci-fi in “The Divided Saint”; and Out There, a younger reader’s allegory, in which our hero Lucy has to escape the planet and her social isolation with the help of her Grandfather, Len.
Alison recreates the evil Palindrome organisation – six super rich super elite scientists who rule the world and retain 98 per cent of its resources. This leaves the rest of the entire globe with the remaining two per cent of the population confined to tiny six-sided hexahomes, to disable them from social interaction, and from exercising their imaginations.

But in our tale, we meet Lucy’s Mum, Rita, who, even in her earliest years and alongside her Dad, Len, must try and stay out of reach of the organisation that want to track them down and kill them – as well as use Rita’s Mum as a weapon against any heretics that dare to imagine.
With killbots, bio machine hybrids and High Priest robotic exorcists, Alison creates a world of horror and turmoil in which the reader will wonder how Len, Cassie and Rita can even hope to survive against such odds (at best), or be confined to the torture room of St Cyriac for the rest of their lives (at worst).

Accompanied by regular collaborator and master of unsettling horror, Warwick Fraser Coombe and collaborator on The Divided Saint, Paul McCaffrey, the team tells Cassie’s Story and Len’s story as two connected narratives for one self-contained thrill ride.
“This one-off story will blow your mind,” enthuses PSYComics publisher Neil Roche. “Potentially, quite literally, if you have a vivid imagination. This is not to be missed!”
SoulBreaker is a single issue 44-page quality print US sized, black and white comic which goes live on Kickstarter on 8th November 2025.
Kickstarter Rewards include a Standard Edition cover by Warwick Fraser-Coombe and Variant Edition cover by Paul McCaffrey. Add-Ons Include a SoulBreaker T-shirt, copies of WarFighter and Out There
