Paper Doll Fun, inspired by the classic movie, Forbidden Planet

If you’re a fan of the classic 1950s movie Forbidden Planet, then you’ll enjoy this paper doll artistry by Sigmon Phillips, conjuring memories of British girls comics, and the art of Katy Keene comic’s Bill Woggon.

Sigmon has created a non-profit fan tribute inspired by MGM’s 1956 film Forbidden Planet, creating a paper doll wardrobe for Altaira, played on screen by Anne Francis in the science fiction reimagining of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Sigmon’s work is done by hand, and is not AI, although he does utilise programs such as GIMP for some of his work.

The film – a template for much SF that followed, including Star Trek – a starship crew travels to a distant planet’s colony to investigate its silence. Once there, they discover two survivors and a dark secret.

The talented artist emphasises this project is a personal artistic exercise and is not intended for sale or commercial distribution.

“My seven-year-old niece is a huge fan of paper dolls, which inspired me to design these sheets based on the outfits worn by Anne Francis in her role as ‘Altaira Morbius’,” he says. “Today, I am delighted to share them with all of you.

“My hope is that fans of the movie will feel free to download these images at no cost and print them for their granddaughters, daughters, or nieces, passing on the appreciation for this cinematic masterpiece to new generations.”

The “Altaira’s Wardrobe” templates are formatted for etter-size printing in high resolution. Each cut-out dress is accompanied by a photograph illustrating the original costume worn by Anne during the filming of the movie.

The work will surely bring back memories to girls comics on both sides of the Atlantic of paper doll art in titles such as weekly comic Bunty and Archie Comics Katy Keene.

Created by Bill Woggon, Katy Keene featured reader-submitted fashions that he would work into the story.
