Sneak Peek: Paul Cornell and Steve Yeowell’s upcoming Commando

Doctor Who and Marvel writer Paul Cornell has revealed he’s written an issue of DC Thomson’s Commando war comic title, with 2000AD veteran Steve Yeowell on art.

Titled “The Longest War“, it’s tentatively scheduled to be out in August.

“I’m hugely proud to have worked in this demanding format, and hope to have pleased my Commando fan nephew, who will now think I’m a real writer!” Paul says.

Paul Cornell has written episodes of ElementaryDoctor Who, PrimevalRobin Hood and many other TV series. He has worked for every major comics company on series such as I Walk With MonstersThe Modern FrankensteinSaucer Country, and This Damned Band, as well as runs for Marvel and DC on Batman and RobinWolverine and Young Avengers.

An omnibus edition of The Death of Wolverine, featuring not only the miniseries of that name, but also Paul’s entire run on the comic with art by Elliott Kalan, was released last December.

Steve Yeowell has been a massively popular 2000AD artist since his debut as artist of the classic “Zenith”, written by Grant Morrison. He is also co-creator of “Maniac 5”, “Red Fang”, “Red Razors” and “The Red Seas”, and has pencilled “Armitage”, “Black Light”, “DeMarco”, “Devlin Waugh”, “Tharg’s Future Shocks”, “Judge Dredd”, “A Life Less Ordinary”, “Nikolai Dante”, “Pussyfoot 5”, “The Scarlet Apocrypha”, “Sinister Dexter”, “Tharg the Mighty”, “Vector 13” and “Black Shuck”.

His recent work on Judge Dredd Megazine includes “Harrower Squad“, a second series, “Urban Rotation”, published last year, written by David Baillie. He previously worked with Paul on Three Little Wishes, published by Legendary Comics, released in collection in 2022.

His work outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic also includes Batman, Doom Patrol, The Invisibles and Sebastian O for DC Comics/Vertigo; and, for Marvel, Skrull Kill Krew, Starman and X-Men.

The Invisibles and 67 Seconds were both great projects to work on.” Steve said in an extensive interview about his career last year. “Mighty Tharg has been particularly kind to me over the years with both the stories he’s asked me to work on and the creators he’s given me the opportunity to work with.”

Commando comics issues 5835 to 5838, including the new stories “Leagues Apart”, written by Dave and Jim Turner with art from Paolo Ongaro, and “Looters!” from Colin Maxwell, drawn by Alejandro Garcia Mangana, are on sale now, available from all good newsagents and digital platforms.
