Shadow Service #1

Coming this August, Shadow Service is a new fantasy espionage series to be published by US publisher Vault Comics, written by Cavan Scott and drawn by Corin Howell. Cavan chats with Tripwire’s editor-in-chief Joel Meadows here about the new project. “At its heart is a supernatural secret service known as MI666 which I’ve been writing on and off for years in short stories,” Cavan teases, “some of which have seen publication but most have not…

Cavan also introduces the project here on YouTube.

• There’s an absolutely fantastic tribute to Carol Kalish by Chris Arrant on GamesRadar. Carol was an incredible direct sales and marketing pioneer at Marvel whose life was cut tragically short in 1991 aged just 36. Chris reveals her impact on Marvel in detail, but in my memory, not covered in the interview, I recall she was a fierce advocate for Marvel UK and what editors Dan Abnett and Steve White were doing on their respective titles. Her loss was a huge blow to many at MUK.

• Independent British comics publisher Markosia Enterprises is looking for recommendations for a Foreign Rights agent or agency that can represent their now 300+ IP’s to overseas publishers.

“Our IP’s are primarily graphic novels,” says Harry Markos, Publisher, “but we also have novels and children’s books in our catalogue, which is growing each month.”

Markosia was established in 2005 and has become one of the UK’s leading publishers of graphic novels. Based in London, they have produced a diverse range of comic books and graphic novels that span almost all genres.

Animation Resources has created a lesson plan based on Preston Blair’s classic book, Advanced Animation.

The course – which has openings for only limited numbers based on a strict application process – is designed to teach students the fundamental skills that animation professionals use in their jobs each and every day. The course covers volumetric drawing, construction, clear silhouettes, line of action, posing, expression and much more.

This course is valuable for other types of artists as well. Cartooning and illustration require the same fundamental skills. It’s never too late to brush up on the fundamentals. Find out how to apply here
