Tube Surfing: US comic and graphic novel sales up, “Snow Blind” heads to Apple Studios, “Lower Decks” trailed

• Good news? Driven by continued growth in popularity of the graphic novel format, combined sales of graphic novels and periodical comics in the United States and Canada totalled roughly $1.21 billion in 2019, according to a joint estimate produced by trade news sites ICv2 and Comichron.

The $1.21 billion estimate represents an 11% increase over total comics and graphic sales in 2018.

The increase in sales was led by the graphic novel book format, in particular continued growth in sales of children’s graphic novels, sold via the bookstore channel, which includes chain bookstores, online retailers, mass market stores, and Scholastic Book Fairs. And while the book format led sales growth overall, Publishers Weekly notes sales of periodical comics in the comics shop market were also up by about 5%.

Apple Studios won the bid for thriller Snow Blind, an adaptation of the graphic novel written by Ollie Masters, with art by Tyler Jenkins, published by BOOM! Studios.

Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star, Gustav Moller (The Guilty) will direct and Patrick Ness will write the script. Gyllenhaal and his Nine Stories partner Riva Marker are producing with Ross Richie and Stephen Christy of BOOM! Studios, home of the graphic novel.

Snow Blind asks the question: what happens when you discover your parents aren’t the people you thought they were?

For high school student Teddy, life in a sleepy suburb in Alaska turns upside down when he innocently posts a photo of his dad online, only to learn he and his family are in the Witness Protection Program. A man seeking revenge invades their town, followed soon after by pursuing FBI agents . . . but what if his dad’s reasons for going into the program aren’t as innocent as he says?

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres on 6th August 2020, only on CBS All Access in the United States. Developed by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites), Star Trek: Lower Decks, a new half-hour animated comedy series, the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973–74 series Star Trek: The Animated Series, focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi have to keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.

I can see the humorous take on Star Trek is going to horrify some, but it looks rather fun to me!
