Every episode of Gerry Anderson’s early Supermarionation series Supercar has been remastered in high definition for an exclusive, 60th anniversary deluxe limited edition Blu-ray from Network – a set that includes a new comic strip by Martin Cater and Bambos Georgiou.
“It’s the marvel of the age!”
In Supercar, first broadcast in the UK in 1961 and 1962, intrepid pilot Mike Mercury takes to the skies to battle criminals and more, aided by Professor Popkiss and the eccentric Dr. Beaker providing his customary blend of erudition and genius.
The series was a commercial success, paving the way for Stingray, Thunderbirds and more. Spin-off merchandise included Supercar strips in TV Comic (No. 483, cover dated 18th March 1961 until No. 667, cover dated 26th September 1964), drawn by H. Watts and Bill Mevin; and early issues of TV Century 21, drawn by Bruno Marraffa in 1965 and 1966.
Supercar was the first Gerry Anderson series to be adapted as a comic book in America, with Gold Key company releasing four issues between November 1962 and August 1963.
An adventure series that blends action, humour and charm in equal measure, Gerry Anderson’s rarely-seen Supermarionation classic gets full-on special treatment in this release, which includes a guide to the series from Andrew Pixley, a replica Supercar pilot’s licence and badge, a making of documentary – and a new comic written by Martin Cater with artwork by Bambos Georgiou, with some input from Martin on the pencils.
The inclusion of a new comic follows the inclusion of such items with previous Network Gerry Anderson-related releases. It would be great to see these collected for a wider audience at some point.
