For those of you who missed the recent Fighting Fantasy Fest 5 event, which took place in London recently, there’s a Live Stream of the event on YouTube.
For comic and illustration fans, you may just want to jump to the 4:05 mark, where you’ll find an Artists Panel with artists Alan Langford (Fighting Fantasy, creator of the graphic novel The Secret of the Aesir, and who kindly provided a strip, “Doomed Covenant” for fans to read here on downthetubes); Ipswich-based Malcolm Barter (Fighting Fantasy, Out of the Pit); Tony Hough (Fighting Fantasy, next appearing at Luton Comic Con on 28th September); and Duncan Smith (Fighting Fantasy, White Dwarf).
The sound isn’t great but the livestream (which also includes panels with Sir Ian Livingstone and other Fighting Fantasy luminaries) offers a whistle stop tour of the artists’ respective careers.
The event was timed perfectly to mark the launch of the long-awaited Magic Realms: The Art of Fighting Fantasy by Sir Ian Livingstone and Jonathan Green.
Magic Realms celebrates the incredible art of the brilliant and highly respected fantasy and science fiction artists who, over the years, worked with the Fighting Fantasy authors to bring their interactive adventures to vivid life.
Each artist is profiled along with select examples of their best work – in vibrant full colour, the astonishing detail on display in all its glory. It features the work some of the world’s best fantasy artists including Chris Achilléos, John Blanche, Jim Burns, Les Edwards, Karl Kopinski, Iain McCaig, Martin McKenna, Ian Miller and Russ Nicholson, among others.
Written by Fighting Fantasy co-creator Ian Livingstone and Fighting Fantasy historian Jonathan Green, Magic Realms is a Who’s Who of fantasy art – an absolutely essential collector’s item for any Fighting Fantasy fan.

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
