Here’s a list of comics – both US and UK releases – on sale in specialist UK comic shops from tomorrow, Wednesday 10th September 2014, courtesy of First Age Comics, Lancaster. We’ve picked out the titles published by British publishers in bold below, or titles with a British connection we’re aware of.

Releases include 2000AD Issue 1898 (also on sale in newsagents) which sees the wrap of the current “Jaegir” story and all other stories reach their penultimate episodes, making way for the long-awaited landmark, Prog 1900. The prog of course features “Judge Dredd” along with “Aquila”, “Brass Sun” and “Black Shuck”.

Doctor Who 11th Doctor #2 from Titan Comics is also on sale, written by Al Ewing with art by Simon Fraser and Gary Caldwell, with four variant covers on offer including this cracking image from Alice X. Chang.  When the Doctor last visited Rokhandi, it was a planet of such stunning natural beauty that an entire solar system had sworn to preserve it. What better place to take new companion Alice Obiefune on her first off-world adventure?

And it would have been a magical vacation… if the TARDIS hadn’t overshot by fifty years. Now the austerity-hit pleasure planet has become a ‘theme safari’ corporate hell, overrun by eerie, giant-headed mascots and a trillion tramping tourist feet!

But there’s something more sinister at play than rampant commercialism and ecological devastation… and the Doctor and Alice need to uncover all of Rokhandi’s long-buried secrets if they’re to escape with their lives!

It’s another fun Who story from Al Ewing with great art from Simon, perfectly capturing the style of the Eleventh Doctor’s adventures for me in comic form.

IDW is offering three variant covers for its new Judge Dredd: Anderson Psi Division series, the second issue offering another all-new adventure from Cassandra Anderson’s early days in Psi-Division from writer Matt Smith and artist Carl Critchlow – ‘King of the Six Sectors.’ The theft of Cursed Earth artifacts has led Anderson deep into the swamplands near Texas City, where she grapples with mutant creatures and a heart of darkness… Plus, Judge Dredd!

Springheeled Jack Cover

Also in comic shops this week is Titan’s collection of the Eagle Award-winning Victorian gothic masterpiece, Springheeled Jack by David Hitchcock, described by Alan Moore as “An ambitious and masterfully executed Victorian fever-dream”  and Dave Gibbons as “Expertly told and truly creepy”.

High above a steampunk London of Penny Dreadfuls, Jack the Ripper and pea-soup fog stalks the legendary demon, Springheeled Jack! From his quarters in Bedlam lunatic asylum, Sir Jack Rackham hunts the creature. Across the gothic rooftops of necropolis London and through the labyrinths of his tortured mind, he pursues the creature that took his beloved.

But just who or what is Springheeled Jack? Does the answer lie amongst the lunatics of Rackham’s sanatorium – or in the very heart of the British Empire: with Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace?

For fans of From Hell to lovers of Sherlock Holmes, this wonderfully pencilled art and riveting story from David Hitchcock is a must.

The release list below features mainly US titles from Marvel Comics, DC Comics, IDW, Image Comics and other publishers, including Trade Paperbacks. We’re not including merchandise releases in these news items.
