Zombies to left of me, zombies to the right… Commando creepiness ahead

Spooky season is here as creepy Commando Issues 5895-5898 go on sale from this Thursday, 9th October 2025 – with a few more scares ahead in the next set too, if the teasers in this one are anything to go by!

Leading the charge is “Commando vs Zombies 4” from Georgia Standen Battle with art by Vicente Alcazar, giving us a story that’s exactly what it says on the cover, introducing new perils to this horror-tinged series, and the promise of more terror to come. Vicente Alcazar’s chiaroscuro style art complements Georgia’s horror tale perfectly.

If it’s a tale you enjoy, and you missed previous episodes, Commando Presents: Commandos vs. Zombies, released last year, is still available from all good book shops, and Commando Presents: Commandos vs. Zombies 2 is out on 22nd October.

Also new this set is “Raven’s Hollow” by Daniel McGachey with art by Mike Donaldson, his second story for the title: an engaging thriller set during World War Two, but actually offers three disparate stories with a twist set in previous eras.

Daniel has previously acknowledged his love of portmanteau horror films – anthologies featuring several short horror stories in a single film – and has exploited the form here with some dark humour and suitably scary scenes, Mike Donaldson the perfect choice to tell the tale.

(Plus, if you’re a fan of the Doctor Who story, The Stones of Blood, you will see just how terrifying large hewn stones really could have been…).

Represented are “Sign of the Vampire Cat”, a fan-favourite issue released from its coffin for the first time in over thirty years, a story set in the jungles of Burma, pitting soldiers of the 14th Army against a suicidal, but very deadly enemy. This one is tense stuff, as the story’s heroes face booby traps, bullets and more to achieve their mission.

Rounding off the set is “Strange Magic” a story from the vaults from writer McDevitt with gorgeous art from Ibanezthat brings this tale of revenge by a disparate group of allies against a ruthless foe to marvellous life. McDevitt handles a large cast with aplomb, each character bringing a vital element to the story, thanks to the machinations of a strange hypnotist. Mesmerising!

Squatted out at sea, just off Nazi-occupied Europe, was a lonely and isolated island. On it, wrapped in fog, barely visible against the gloom, a mansion with a dark secret.

An elite group of highly-trained British Commandos paddled towards that island, unaware of what awaited them… soldiers who would prove no match for the monsters hidden beneath a house of horrors!

The living dead return in Georgia Standen Battle’s ongoing series – this time, the story is expanded with twists, turns and riddles alongside monstrous ghouls and zombie dogs!

In ancient Japan, a legend was handed down from generation to generation, a legend about a vampire cat whose presence meant certain death.

Now a specialist unit of Japanese airborne troops wore the sign of that vampire cat on their headbands. They were highly-trained killers, and wherever they landed, death stalked with them…

At the height of World War Two, a trio of strangers arrived in a tiny coastal village with a hidden purpose, only to be told a trilogy of dark tales from its mysterious past… Stories of a Roman Centurion’s plans for a new road through a sacred forest are disturbed, Viking raiders encountering something in the unnatural sea mist, and a conniving witchfinder getting more than he bargained for when he rides into town! Perhaps the newcomers should heed these stories, for Raven’s Hollow has ways of dealing with unwelcome guests!

Against all odds, three men – an Indian, an Australian and an Englishman – had escaped death in the jungle. They had been brought together in a common cause by a man who knew exactly how they were going to fight from now on. And how did he know that? Because he was a magician!
