Crowdfunding Spotlight: Chrome Roses Giant Sized Cyberpunk Books 1 & 2 by Monty Nero

After raising £75,000 in pledges for his mind blowing cyberpunk epic Chrome Roses over the course of its run, independent comic creator Monty Nero is running a Kickstarter for a Giant Size edition of the whole trilogy, launching 3rd February 2026.

Influenced by Blade Runner, Moebius, Hellboy comics and film noir, Chrome Roses offers an exciting cyberpunk adventure featuring Kramm, an outcast detective, tracking down Teo, a punk vigilante, to unlock a mystery surrounding some eerie skinfreak zero-G murders. The second issue introduces badass new character Entropy Brown in a devastating new story rendered in moody silver and red.

The series is the creation of Dundee-based Monty Nero, whose also created the award-winning Death Sentence series with artist Mike Dowling, collected as a 470 page hardback by Titan in English and published by Delcourt in French. He’s also written The Incredible Hulk and X-men for Marvel, stories for 2000AD and Vertigo Comics, and collaborated with artists as diverse as Martin Simmonds, Salvador Larroca and Al Davison.

Chrome Roses stunning art and story has gained praise from some top industry names, including fellow 2000AD contributors Rob Williams (“Fun stuff. Monty Nero creates a relatable cyberpunk detective world that feels two seconds removed from the strains and stresses of our 2025 lives. And it also has talking cats!”) and artist Patrick Goddard (“Monty is really doing some stellar work here. Very much in the 2000AD way!”).

“With beautiful art and a killer concept, it’s a cyber punk masterpiece.” enthuses Image, DC and Marvel artist Martin Simmonds, his opinion echoed by Hellboy B.P.R.D, Marvel, and 2000AD artist Laurence Campbell, who describes Chrome Roses as “A great mix of social comment, fast paced action, mystery, and satire!”

You only need to take one look at the art to see how much love and devotion has gone into every hand drawn page to appreciate just how impressive Chrome Roses is. My mind was utterly blown when the first issue arrived at the downthetubes dungeon, and it still is. You can utterly understand why artist Nicola Scott describes it as “beautiful” and Marvel artist Luke Ross is right on the money in calling it “stunning cyberpunk” that “takes us on a thrilling journey.”

Now Chrome Roses is set to be published as a Giant Size edition. What started as a cool add on is now a series in its own right, featuring new covers, a new character, and a previously unseen new story.

“It’s a unique format,” Monty explains. “Printing this big is expensive, but with this campaign we’ll reach new cyberpunk fans discovering the trilogy for the first time.”

“Readers loved the detailed cyberpunk art, and this giant-sized version is like suddenly watching in IMAX,” he continues.

“It gives me an excuse to put even more detail and time into every page. Each book is half a metre high, so the detail and scale of it really hits you hard. Particularly on the double page spreads.”

Art for the whole comic is hand drawn by Nero with pencils, ink, copics, airbrush and acrylic paint, with original pages of art available as rewards. “I wanted to channel the vibe of classic 1980s cyberpunk, William Gibson and Phillip K Dick, while inventing something that looks and feels new,” says Monty.

“I’m mainly influenced by Blade Runner, Moebius, Hellboy comics and film noir. All those heavy black shadows, kinetic action, and a mix of short and longer stories which interlink to form a gripping ongoing narrative.”

You can order the first, second, and third Giant-sized Cyberpunk Broadsheet in a few short weeks. Book 1 is already printed and will ship with the Chrome Roses print rewards shipping in March, so no waiting there.
