Crowdfunding Spotlight: Cutaway Comics Douglas Adams graphic novel, “Share & Enjoy”

Cutaway Comics, best known for their Doctor Who spinoff titles, have just launched a Kickstarter for Share & Enjoy, a new graphic novel written by Mark Griffiths with art by Martin Geraghty “the definitively inaccurate graphic novel celebrating the life and times of Douglas Adams, creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Olympic-standard procrastinator, computer guru, frustrated rock star, respected conservationist, techno-futurist, beloved comic genius… Douglas Adams packed one heck of a lot into his all-too short, improbable existence. Now, assuming it hits its ambitious £50,000 target, Cutaway Comics is to publish Share and Enjoy, the definitively inaccurate graphic novel celebrating the life and times of this absurdly talented and much missed Earthman.

From Brentwood School, Essex to the palm-lined boulevards of Hollywood, via Cambridge Footlights, Python collaborations, abject misery in a bath with a talking duck, and the rainforests of Madagascar, join the creative team of award-winning author, playwright and Douglas Adams super-fan Mark Griffiths and Doctor Who Magazine artist Martin Geraghty as they explore the life, universe and everything of Douglas Adams in vibrant graphic novel format.

Writer Mark Griffiths previously wrote the acclaimed Omega mini-series for Cutaway Comics, as well as the much-loved Douglas Adams hit Edinburgh Fringe play, We Apologise for the Inconvenience.

A project long in the making, Share & Enjoy, designed by Will Brooks, edited by Gareth Kavanagh, has enjoyed quite the Douglas-esque meander to the page, as Mark explains…

“Having originally written We Apologise for the Inconvenience in 2013 as a two hander exploring Douglas’ struggles with deadlines, it’s extremely appropriate that this particular project has had more than its fair share of them, starting life as a TV play, before expanding to a motion picture screenplay and then morphing into a graphic novel. But it’s a story I’ve been aching to share, I hope people enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!”

This 80-page graphic novel features dynamic and bold art by Martin Geraghty (Doctor Who Magazine, BBC Studios, Cutaway Comics), Share and Enjoy marks a departure from Martin’s signature muscular action art into a style more reminiscent of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s fun and whimsy.

“It’s fantastic to be working on something as varied and imaginative as Share and Enjoy,” he enthuses. “From the jungles of Madagascar to 1980’s London and everything in-between, I’m already loving immersing myself into Mark’s wildly entertaining and inventive biopic of this fascinating, funny and complex human being!”

“Like Douglas’ well documented extended writing of So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, I sometimes feel we’ve been working on Share and Enjoy forever” notes Cutaway Comics Commissioning Editor Gareth Kavanagh.

“Douglas and his brand of creativity is so missed. He had so much to give, and I think he would become the next Sir David Attenborough, had we not so suddenly lost him in 2001.

“The phrase ‘unique talent’ is too often bandied around, but Douglas truly deserves the epithet. I think his life story is arguably as interesting as any of his fictional creations. It’s a thrill to be telling his story in a completely fresh and visually arresting style”.
