Based on the multiple Eisner Award-winning comic book series from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, Criminal takes viewers into a world of thieves, killers, and con artists whose lives are shaped by crime, family, and the consequences of their pasts.

Originally launched in 2006, Criminal has become one of the most celebrated crime comics of the last two decades, with Brubaker and Phillips continuing to expand its interconnected world and redefine what crime comics can be.

The Criminal TV adaptation begins with the story of two friends, Leo Patterson (Charlie Hunnam) and Ricky Lawless (Gus Halper), one trying to fight his way out of the world of crime they were raised in, the other desperate to follow in the footsteps of his father, a legendary outlaw. And when Ricky’s older brother Tracy (Luke Evans) returns home from the Army, their tragic family history comes home with him. Drawn into their orbit are Greta (Adria Arjona), a sharp-tongued car thief from Leo’s past, and Mallory (Emilia Clarke), Ricky’s girlfriend, who fears what he’ll do to get by. Gunfights, heists, and tragic romance are the order of the day, but will anyone make it out alive?

The first season takes its cues from the first two story arcs of the comic series, Criminal, Volume 1: Coward and Criminal, Volume 2: Lawless.

If you’re looking to get familiar with Criminal before the series arrives, there’s no better place to start than the comics themselves.
