Out next year from US publisher Dynamite Entertainment is Masters of Spanish Comic Book Art by comics artist David Roach, and as you can see from this sneak peek, it’s an absolutely beautiful book and one any comics historian is going to want on their shelves.
Set to debut in late January, it’s a dream project for David, who many of us in the comics industry consider the “go to” expert when it comes to identifying some of the many talented Spanish creators who have worked on British and US comics, often uncredited down the years.
Designed by Rodolfo M, Masters Of Spanish Comic Book Art is a celebration of the great artists who revolutionised horror comics in the 1970s with their work on Warren’s Vampirella, Creepy, and Eerie horror comics. This first-ever comprehensive history of Spanish comic books and Spanish comic artists reveals their extraordinary success – not just in Spain and the United States, but around the world.
Running to 270 pages, containing artwork from over 80 artists, this in-depth retrospective includes profiles of such legends as Esteban Maroto, Sanjulian, Jose Gonzalez, Jordi Bernet, Enrich, Victor De La Fuente, Jose Ortiz and Luis Garcia Mozos. With 500 illustrations, over half scanned directly from the original artwork, Masters Of Spanish Comic Book Art honours the “Golden Generation” whose artwork inspired the imagination of comic book lovers everywhere – and twenty of today’s most exciting stars.
“It’s practically two artists editions for a fraction of the price,” David suggests.
We totally agree, and we rather think you will too. The book is available to order now.
Born in Cardiff in 1965, David was consumed with both a passion for drawing and writing and a deep seated love of comic books from an early age. After studying fine art and Philosophy in art college he was fortunate enough to start work on the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, 2000AD, where he drew the Nemesis and Judge Anderson strips for a number of years. When US comics publishers actively sought out British creators in the 1990s, he worked for DC (Batman, Star Trek), Dark Horse (Aliens, Star Wars) and Topps (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs).
For many years, David has also provided illustrations for advertising and games including many Dungeons and Dragons series.
As a writer, he has contributed to numerous magazines and is the author or co-author of 17 books including The Art of Vampirella and The Art of Jose Gonzalez (both published by Dynamite), Aarrgghh!! It’s War and The Art of War (published by Carlton, featuring cover art from Britian’s War, Battle, Air Ace and War at Sea Picture Libraries),and The Warren Companion (Two morrows).
For the best part of 16 years he has been a regular artist and inker on the Doctor Who comic in Panini’s Doctor Who Magazine and is the cover artist of the Doctor Who Graphic Novel series. The latest, Evening’s Empire, has just bee released.
He is also an occasional artist on Judge Dredd for both 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine and recently, he has become closely associated with Vampirella, drawing covers for Dynamite, compiling several Vampi artists editions for them and drawing countless commissions.
I think you’ll agree this book looks stunning and based on his past work, the text and stories told will be just as fascinating. Order a copy now!
