Happy Anniversary, Stingray!

October 1964 saw the launch of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s Supermarionation series Stingray on television – the first the British TV series to be made entirely in colour.

Last year, Fanderson celebrated the show’s 60th anniversary in the 2025 Fanderson Annual, which included the following comic strip by myself, John Freeman, drawn by Bill Storie.

We’re publishing this here ahead of publication of the 2026 Fanderson Annual, available to Fanderson members, which includes our all-new “Thunderbirds” comic strip.

As with our Fireball XL5 strip, published in the 2024 Fanderson Annual (online here on downthetubes) comic is inspired by the series as visualised in TV Century 21, not the TV show.

Anything can happen in the next half hour!

The classic comic strips, illustrated by legendary artists such as Ron Embleton, Michael Strand and Jon Davies, will plunge you back into the pulse-pounding aquatic adventures of Captain Troy Tempest, Lieutenant Phones and the mysterious Marina. In addition to the TV Century 21 strips, this volume’s new stories – written by top talents James Swallow, Ian Edginton, Chris Thompson, Jack Knoll and Ben Wolf Page – have been brought vividly to life by renowned artists Brian Williamson, Keith Burns, Matt Brooker, John McCrea and Lee Sullivan. The tales stand alone as exhilarating underwater adventures, each featuring a different undersea race – some familiar from the television series others entirely new, and also link together to form a larger narrative culminating in a dramatic cliffhanger where Stingray unwittingly plays into Titan’s sinister plans, forging a powerful alliance of oceanic adversaries.
